My turn to weigh in
As someone who has playerd both AC1 and Horizons (I still dabble now and then) It's very easy for me to make distinctions. EQ, EQ2 and WoW are "just games' IMO and nothing that strikes my fancy. AC1 has been on my computer for almost 2 1/2 years now and it's about to be removed. Several reasons for this, but the biggest being that AC is a game whose time has come and gone. I've become dissatisfied with the mad damn rush to reach upper levels that seems to have infected the player base.
Horizons may have been a great game at one time but, as another poster indicated, it's been beat with the nerf stick a few times too often. At one point I couldnt wait to get home from work and launch Horizons. Now, the ridiculous "go to a trainer" to change classes, same old mobs with new skins etc etc, they've all got under my skin.
Ever since I load SoR and first launched it, I've found myself captivated by many, many things (see my Thanks Nevrax thread). Friday afternoon/evening for example, I teamed up with some guildies and other players and headed for Fleeting Gardens. I could NOT believe my eyes when I "came up for air" and saw that it was time for me to get ready for work
In my opinion, there's only one thing Nevrax could do to the game content that would possibly spell SoR's doom. That would be if the designers and coders kept introducing newer mobs which are actually "recycled" current mobs with new skins/abilities. To keep the game fresh, I would suggest (at irregular intervals AND without advance notice to the playerbase) the introduction of a completely new type of mob. Perhaps this would necessitate the removal of an existing creature. However, I think these changes only be temporary and then 'return' the removed mob. (Story devs, are you taking notes yet? )
There's my comments and perhaps a suggestion or two. Take care all, and let's see what we shall see. Meanwhile, I'll keep working on my friends to leave HZ and come to SoR full time. (I've already got 2 90 per cent convinced and several more at least 50 per cent. )

Re: Great game at the wrong time.
Someone mentioned about player age ... It makes me wonder if kids find SoR too complicated and confusing while I, being not a kid (but still very much young at heart), find the game rich with a real depth of experience.
I don't just target a mob and turn my toon loose on it --- I'm constantly adjusting how I fight (little dodge here, little bleeding there). It's not just watching a bar or a box move/change and then picking up the loot.
And, gosh! You have to *think* to create the best stanza for your actions. Oh my!

Re: Great game at the wrong time.
As someone right above me mentioned, there really is no young base of players. I know that on Tryker Island, I'm the youngest at fifteen years of age, which is rather surprising for me, at least. Most people at least claim to be thirty.
This is actually rather good, as you see a lot of people my age or below that just don't seem to stay constant with a game, going for the 'next new thing' every time.

Re: Great game at the wrong time.
My guild won't even respond to the thread I started about this game
I really wish people would at least give the game a chance. I have a couple of friends that play, but I would like for my guild to at least acknowledge that it exists...WoW isn't the only game out there. *sigh*
They did the same thing with AO. We had a vote about whether we should have guild support for SW:G and only 3 people gave a positive yes. Yet, the leaders decided to have guild support over there. We had 4 people that played AO, but that wasn't enough for guild support....

Re: Great game at the wrong time.
I'm still trying to get some of my AC2 guildmates to come over to Ryzom. All most of them do is complain about how the game has gotten so stale and there's nothing at all to do but level and the new crafting system stinks, etc. But they won't give up their old chars that they've sunk so much time into. They aren't planning to go to WoW or EQ2 either.
Fear of 'noobism'? Fear of the unknown? I don't know.

Re: Great game at the wrong time.
Hey, some of us can handle more than one game, you know? Me, f'rinstance =P (In fairness, I know people with full-time jobs, families and such, would probably not have said time, and SoR would win out most likely if I weer in that situation.)
I've fallen very much for SoR, because it is an innovative game in a fun but generally stale genre (Although I admit, I've not had vast experience with MMORPGs). The player base is very much on the mature side (Though I wonder about that Tybalt sometimes... ), and I've made more friends in two weeks of Ryzom than I did in almost seven months of CoH (Though the friends I made there were excellent, they were also sparse. Mostly it was partying for more grinding. The most fun grinding ever, at least until it wore you down, but grinding nonetheless.).
I have no interest in EQ2, but I am and have for a long time been looking forward to WoW. Why? Well, because I've loved the Warcraft series since the original, and it's the only series which can match Westwood's sublime Command and Conquer games in the whole RTS genre. I know I'm going to bubble with apopleptic, catalepsy-inducing rage at the fanbois, n00bs and general jerks that will flood the game, but I have faith that I'll find a reasonable group of players who aren't losers. The RealmVRealm play appeals to me greatly, and since I first annihilated everything in my path I've wanted to be a Tauren in some way or another.
I think the best way to get SoR to succeed is to spread the word, though. I know if I could contact my old FFXI LS I'd be able to convince at least a couple of people to have a look at this, because they were RP-oriented. But still, I hope we'll be alright. Who can tell? All we can do is make people play the game, I guess =P

Re: Great game at the wrong time.
A magazine article is what got me interested in Ryzom to start. There is a big difference between hype, and a real live game. I dont' think EQII or WoW can live up to their own hype. They may both be very good games, but they just don't do anything that inovative to destroy all games there ever were. People will play them and some won't like them.
As a player I don't see the business models for Ryzom. If the suits did their jobs correctly, they didn't overestimate the player base needed to support their game. Their are several games that started out slowly and have quietly build good following. One post mentioned AO and I've been watching Eve slowly build up its loyal fanbase.
Ryzom has had a pretty decent launch. It's job now is to move forward. If the game improves, it will get the word of mouth it needs to survive. By no means has this game got its fanbase locked up. Many of us are waiting for the "rest of the game". I like what I see and I'm enjoying myself, but the promises of the future is what will keep me here.

Re: Great game at the wrong time.
It's like we are all beta testers!
Agreed, the timing hurts. I probably will try out the big guns also to see which I prefer . . . which is the real test, no? If Ryzom can stand up to those games in quality it will succeed, and greatly so, just by word of mouth.
For quite some time now I have heard people speak of WoW as the oncoming savior of all mmorgs. Not much talk about EQ2 along those lines, but I'm guessing the type of player that might be attracted to EQ2 isn't looking for a "savior" of mmorgs, they just want a good game.
But for those who are looking to WoW to undo everything they dislike about mmorgs I just chuckle and look back at how so many were convinced SWG would do the same before it finally arrived. If WoW doesn't deliver what people expect, I think a lot of those players will turn to a game like Ryzom before they turn to EQ2.

Re: Great game at the wrong time.
Agreed Nykle.
Nevrax, and Ryzom is in a possibly fantastic position right now.
All things point to being crushed by the "bigger" games, but I tend to think the bigdogs are thinking they can imitate what's been done with flashier graphics, and a popular name, and players will flock. Well, I would think most of us aren't that easy. I have ZERO desire to play the other games, for said reasons. When the players who were planning on playing those other games see that they are being led by the nose to a stale meal, you would think, they will leave.
When the Ryzom gets flooded, I just hope they open new servers for them, and keep us in our own little genepool
