Thinking of getting Saga of ryzom

Post by birra82 »

Hello!

I'm thinking of getting Saga of ryzom. Have the trial on download right now. But.. As always.. A trial period is never enough to get to know the game.
I have played EQ(very briefly), Anarchy online(for a couple of months) and WoW(since the second American Beta release).
I loved AO, even though I found the crafting hard to get into. Sadly RL messed up my gametime, so I quit playing. I fell in love with WoW from the start, easy going and it is Warcraft :) But it's too easy going, the community isnt very friendly anymore and as for PvP... It's a free-for-all gankfest. As long as its a sure and easy kill, kill it. If its a even fight, get four of your friends and kill it.

Sooo, what I am wondering is..

1. Is this game "alive"? I meen, is people leaving in masses or is the community growing?

2. Is the community friendly? Or rather, newbie friendly? Will I get the help I need or will I get bashed for asking newbie questions?

3. Is the fighting system and crafting system any good? Or are they mindboggeling complex or laughable easy? Or perhaps somewhere in between?

4. How is the Role playing? Does the RPers get bashed by leetkiddies and called nerds and the likes?

5. Is the game any fun? Or does it get repetetive?

I prolly got many more questions but I can't think of them right now.
Anyways.. I will see you all in game! For atleast 7 days :)

/Cheers

Hej Birra,

you will find that we Atysians currently live in 'interesting times', to say the least of it.

I'll try to answer your questions as neutrally as I can.

1. Due to current in-game happening some people are leaving. The community has never been a really large one, but always very vibrant. Read through the forums to see what's going on, but please don't form your opinion on what you read just there. Go in-game and make up your own name.

2. The community is very newbie-friendly. In fact, SoR has one of the best and friendliest communities around.

3. I'm mainly a digger and crafter, so I'll leave others to answer the fighting part. The crafting system is very intricate, but understandable. Once you've gotten the hang of it with one item, it more-or-less becomes the same for all items. Items are created from several different materials. Each material comes in different qualities, colours, statistics. Many crafters experiment a lot with find the uber-ultimate material combination for just that right sword/armour/jewel.

4. There is roleplaying. Though not fully pervasive. You will not be laughed at for RPing, that's for sure though.

5. It is fun and it is repetetive. I think there is no game out there where you really and fully can escape 'the grind', but SoR at least lets you decide what to do and doesn't really force you to do only one thing all the time.
Thosam - Hunter of small defenseless animals, Forager near safe areas and Crafter of useless junk.

I hereby declare myself to be a Hominist. Ask me about my philosophy.

I survived Patch 1. :) I'm not so sure about Episode 2.

Welcome birra.

1: The game is definately alive. From what I learned there has been worse threats to it's existance in the past. The game isn't crowded everywhere but it's not deserted either.

2: Can't get much more newbie friendly. The game's interface is complicated and I have yet to hear someone being mocked for asking questions in the "region-channel". The skillbased levelsystem with all it's branches supports old players and new players to team.

3: Fighting system is so-so, crafting is GOOD. I think WoW-fighting felt more "physical" than this, but the "stanzas" (the building blocks you can combine to make new attacks with) is interesting to play around with.

4: Roleplayers are not bashed. While strangers will automagically know your name and you can't expect a IC response from everyone you will not be mocked for living your character. Eventually you'll find your type of players to team and guild with.

5: While there is almost no quests at all compared to WoW it might be a little culture shock. There is lots of grinding is you want to level.

See you, don't forget to leave the newbie island. Leave it the moment it bores you.

Hello and welcome to Ays :)

1. Judging by the number of people still fighting over the game I'd say it's still alive...
Can say wether player numbers are growing or not but only time will tell...

2. A lot of high lvl players appear to be living in the newly opened PvP arena leaving fewer in the mainlands to help out the newbies but there a still enough left, I think, who are friendly and will help out newbies in anyway they can.

3. You will find crafting in SoR makes much more sense than in AO and while the skill system is somewhat complex it's still eas enough once you get used to it. Also there is no way to "gimp" your char by one bad choice so there's no real need for re-rolling :p

4. There's still a lage(?) role playing community and if they are getting "bashed" they don't seem to care much as they just keep at it...

5. Like any MMO it can become a grind if your aim is to hit the level cap in no time flat but as there is no class system this can easily be avoided by focussing on several skills at the same time (dig, craft, fight)

Hope you enjoy your stay on our beautiful planet and see you in game (maybe)

ps seeing how you are on a 7 day trial I would suggest leaving the newbie lands as soon a possible as they can be a bit lonely and isolated.

one more ps... Tryker are the best kind of people and the lakelands are the place to be... :p

Just a little remark about the response to #1:

Often people leaving the game or people who aren't pleased with recent developments are all over the forums and are shouting the loudest. Those who are pleased with the updates or even the ones returning to the game don't tend to get involved in the discussion or even are totaly ignoring the forums.

I have been away from Ryzom for about 3 months. Before that I was playing SoR every single day for 1 year and 3 months, and I got bored with it.
Recent developments gave me a new goal, it gave me something different to do and it brought more excitement to the game.
With the outpost coming up, everything is looking great for SoR.

If I compare the number of people around now to what it was about a year ago I have the feeling there are about twice even tree times as many people online.

You can do anything you like in this game, whenever you want to. Wanne be a mage? Feel free to do so! Wanne be a crafter 5 minutes later? Sure no problem! This results in an exciting game, wich gets you hooked pretty fast.

So be warned, if you subcribe, you will loose a lot of your spare time you have :D

That people are still intersted in this game is reassuring :) Here's my take on your questions.

1. Honestly? I see the recent population growth here is stagnant or worse. The current developments left a lot of people feeling disheartened and some regular players may have already decided to leave for good. I wouldn't say people are leaving in "masses" though (perhaps because there weren't masses around in the first place  ). There's enough people around for now though, and the additions being made now and the near future may end up bringing in more people than it removes. Who knows.

2. Newbie bashing is the exception rather than the norm. I've yet to see it occur in the game since it hit retail, although of course that's not to say it doesn't happen. Really, you should expect a warm welcome from almost everyone you meet.

3. It's an interesting system for sure, especially due to the customisable actions making it possible to achieve the same thing in different ways. Of course some ways are better than others but that can also come down to personal preference too!

For instance, when fighting with a melee weapon do you draw mainly from your stamina reserves or from hp? Will you consider exerting more energy in order to improve your chances of scoring a hit or inflicting additional injury to the target?

With crafting though, the diversity comes from the range of materials available rather than the configuration of stanzas. Each piece affects the overall stats of the item and (in the case of armour) colour as well. There's room for experimentation there for sure :)

It'll be hard going at first, but shout out in region and you should get some well-meaning advice to get you moving.

4. There is a solid roleplaying community here. Plenty of the pure gaming mindset too, but by and large both groups together with the in-betweens get along just fine (just stay away from the forums :p )

5. Well, I've been playing since the April open beta last year if that's any help :D Fun is formed pretty much in your own way, with little in the way of designated tasks to keep you occupied. Therefore, going out and exploring the world, hunting for experience and general socialising makes up the bulk of the entertainment. Regular events concocted by other players and the game staff provide most of the rest.
ps seeing how you are on a 7 day trial I would suggest leaving the newbie lands as soon a possible as they can be a bit lonely and isolated.
Seconded! This is general advice that's repeated to just about all the new players, and for a reason. The new lands really are a bad representation of our world and I'm sure players have left because of it. Everything you have over there you got in the main areas too, with the addition of the community you would otherwise be separated from. So do come over ^_^
