New to the game...

Post by charisi »

Hiya, I'm new to the game...sorta. I am downloading the client right now, so Im technically not IN the game yet =P Anyway, I was wondering if you guys could help me out while Im waiting on the client to d/l and answer a few questions for me. How is the game as far as solo content? Is there enough available to people that prefer to solo, like me? Is the game super addictive like WoW was when it first came out? And lastly, what is the community like? Thanks in advance for your time.

Welcome to Atys!

About soloing, some people think it is impossible, some say it is not. At this moment there is no real 'solo quest system', except for some easy missions.
(reading this post might help: http://www.ryzom.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18705)

There are more solo-ers around, but I think a lot join a guild after some time, which brings me to your 3rd question.

The community is really great. It is really friendly and helpful, which makes the game real fun, imo.

I tend to solo a bit, it's working. Though teaming up with healer/tank/nuker is faster and safer. One negative aspect is that there's probably more discussions in a normal sized guilds internal chat than in Around.

The game is addictive, as I believe most good multiplayer games are. It's a matter of taste, I had a slow start myself. It took some time getting motivated, WoW's quests throws you into the action straight away. There's no 6 hour long instance runs (travelling can take time, I think, if you have to sneak past the enemies).

Because the community is a bit more mature I think you find less "I pwn u, n00b!" than in WoW. Also getting to top level of everything seems less of a deal in this game, there's 11450 skill levels here and I doubt anyone has even half of that.

Speaking as one who have mostly solo'ed for the last 8+ months, it is possible to solo, but it is not straight forward, as in doing melee only for 100+ levels.
It makes it easier if you take advantage of one branch abilities to help in others. For instance level harvest and get HP and evasive maneuvers up above you combat skills, which makes you less prone to dying.
There are a lot of other ways to gain an advantage, I won't spoil them for you, but for this advise, teaming has a lot more to offer than solo does. :)
Solo in SoR is a bit of an art form, it can take a bit of trial and error to get it to work all the time.

WoW isn't super addictive, you're here already ;)

If you want to solo, I doubt you'll find any online game addictive after a few weeks. If you mingle with the great community in SoR though... you risk finding out what super addictive means :)

Welcome to Atys!

Yes you CAN solo but the thing that makes team work 'better' is that it's quicker. If you solo, you have to rest between fights while your health regenerates. In a team with a healer, there's no downtime.

The only truly solo skill tree in Ryzom is crafting. You always do that alone. With the other 3 skill trees (melee, magic and foraging), you can team up with other players.

The community is great here. One of the truly great things about the game, one of the things that keep players here. You'll often find some lively debates going on if you visit these forums regularly. That is largely due to the fact that the community loves this game and feel strongly about it one way or another. :)

I first started playing Ryzom way back in May of last year during the Beta test. I was hooked from day one and have been here ever since. So yes, personally, I think Ryzom is VERY addictive. I can give it up any time i like though, honest I can. ;)
