If you have drivers older than version 71.89 then there is the distinct possibility that the game client will lock upon trying to load. Or you may experience the 'Please wait...' message when getting into game.

Go get the 71.89 drivers from http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html if you have anything less than a 5x00 series nVidia based video card. Newer versions of the nVidia based cards seem to work fine with the newer drivers. Remove your current drivers, reboot your computer, ignore the 'hardware found' messages and then run the video driver installer program.
