So im new to the game and having fun. Love everything about the game, did the training isle. When i felt comfortable enough to journey into the mainland i left the island.
So i ported browsed around and met a player. I asked her a few questions about things i havent figured out yet. Well she didnt answer any of them instead she started asking me questions. Examples "Are you new?" "how do you like the game?" seemed innocent enough questions. Then she asked me if i have "heal other". Told her i didnt since i want my char to be a bad ass warrior. Then she told me " Your character is a gimp, your no good to anyone delete your char".
What the hell? after putting in 5 hours into the char that i feel was great somone tells me to delete it cuz i dont have heal other.
Now my question is, is this normal? am i really gimped? are most of the players here like this person?
thanks for letting me rant.
Bad start
Re: Bad start
As far as I know, it is not normal to be told you're 'gimped', no you are not weaker based on your choice not to focus on healing magic (you can do that later anyway if you want), and I can't think of many people who would say such a thing to a newcomer.

Re: Bad start
isaar,
I've never had that happen to me in a year of playing the game. My guess is you, unluckily, stumbled across a bad egg, as it were. Everyone has their gaming style, but for the most part players here are talkative, helpful and friendly.
Dont let one bad interaction turn your stomach for the populace of the game, or the game itself.
good luck, good hunting and enjoy
edit/add on: as for 'gimped', which I figure to mean - ruined or crippled in some way... I don't really thing you can be 'gimped' in this game. I've made bad choices in a past and its taken me some time to fix the errors I've made, but you're hardly and far from being ruined. You can do level whatever you want, man! I'm a warrior turned digger and I didn't pick up a pick until I was months into the game. This is the same for magic... you can always start that at a later date and I think you'd have to make some really really horrid choices to 'gimp' your character. And unless they do a reroll again (which was when I made some bad training mistakes) I don't think you'll be a bad way.
Play your warrior, man! (though a basic heal spell does come in handy when a friend needs a rez)

Although it is true that, eventually, a decent heal spell is good for every homin to have - whoever you were talking to is flat wrong in telling you that your character is 'gimped'. No matter what skills you started with, you will always be able to earn enough skill points to pick up whatever new branch you want to explore. If you continue to play with enthusiasm, and don't let goofy people like that get you down, eventually you'll have more SP's than you know what to do with

Re: Bad start
Agreed with all. You don't have to be a healer if you don't wanna be. However, I would recommend getting at least a few levels for this reason. Say you're the 'bad-aced' warrior you spoke of. Lets say that a mean ol torbak comes and eats your mages that you were trying to defend. You being the awesome person you are, manage to narrowly escape death and defeat Mr. Torbak. You however, don't have any heal spells. Your mage friends just got death penalty and had to respawn cause you couldn't heal them back to life, or 'rez' as wel like to call it. So not sayin you have to spend your entire atys day healing others, but you should do it for a few minutes just so you can rez if needed. How are you to come and rescue if you dont have the ability?
As for the gimped....the way this game is set up, there are no gimp characters. You can do whatever you want as long as you want and as well as you want. As I tell a lot of new players, the only differece between characters is look and how you play them. So keep at it, maybe pick up that one heal spell for safety sake, and go kick some butt!

Re: Bad start
Figured it was one of the bad apples, anyway i still love the game despite that incident, unfortunatly i did delete the Char and started working on a Tryker Warrior/magic/crafter.keoni wrote:Although it is true that, eventually, a decent heal spell is good for every homin to have - whoever you were talking to is flat wrong in telling you that your character is 'gimped'. Trying to balance it out, i really want to be helpful and if having "Heal Other" will be helpful that would be my first goal.
BTW is anyone recruiting i would love to join a guild that could give me pointers. Names Donelly ingame.
Re: Bad start
who was this unsavoury character that told you this and practically forced char deletion?
I will certainly do them no favours should i find out who it was!

Hi Isaar / Donnely.
It indeed was a very bad apple, most of the players are very helpful, so just ask most of them if you need help. And I think you had a good reason to rant in this case
The 'heal other' is usefull indeed but you can get it after getting some skill points for magic. Most of the players get some level in healing after some time, because it is one of the most useful skills in the game.
I hope to see you soon in Fairhaven.

Re: Bad start
Donelly, several guilds are recruiting, including my own. Many have threads in the "guild" section of the forums that explain more about what the guilds are about. Based on that, you (or any other new characters who may be reading this) should be able to find a guild that seems to match your interests and goals in the game.isaar wrote:BTW is anyone recruiting i would love to join a guild that could give me pointers. Re: Bad start
Maybe they ment as in the choices ya picked for starting pack as in war/war/war which imo is poo unless ya really do just wanna be a kick ass warrior sonner then later then you go for it
They should of been alot nicer about explaning it though but you would see you would save Skill points later and in the end Skill points are like dapper
have lots of em and nothing to us em on. Just make sure ya skip the whole "starter island" thing and come play with the real people of Atys and get a true feal for the game.
