You have to be within 1m I believe if you aren't using cone/angle stanzas. Normally when you prospect you will find the relevant materials in a cone in front of you, and you add stanzas to your action to determine how big the cone is.

Hello Baggie, welcome to Atys.

Your first prospect skill is a very small one, like Saiwin says, about 1 m from the source. If you get some more skill points you can buy ones that are farther away and make the angle in which you look wider. And that will make it much easier to find the materials.

And yes, there are places where there are no materials, but if you try around the towns, you should find something I think..

All the skills have slow beginnings - almost to the point of frustration. Starting out with magic, craft and harvest packages you only get the extraction skill, I think. (I'm doing this from memory so bear with me) So the best thing to do is go around and get the free pops in the towns until about lvl 11 or 14, when the source mechanics change and you start getting source mode numbers. Then get prospection and range. Maybe the "up to" mat quality (fine, choice) stanzas. At this low of a level its best just to be able to find anything - refining your abilities will come later. Don't bother to get any quality above 20, which is only as high as the mats go (except for mission mats) on the island.

Go around the edges of the towns and prospect - right at the end of where the guards run - and fire off prospects and pull those. What you're mainly doing is getting xp and learning where stuff is (right click on the map to leave a flag where you've found the good stuff). The towns don't all have the same mats around them. Thus you get to learn how to sneak and/or fight and get your hit points up so you can live moving from town to town.

Get both gentle and harsh extraction plans until you can build a good action plan which is a combination of both - Speed 1 - Gentle, Rate 2 - Harmful and then Quality 20 - Gentle. You won't need much in the way of careplanning (preservation and stability) with that set up.

Create a seperate hands bar with different actions - like one scans as far as you can, another with the widest angle and yet another that uses the least amount of focus to pull up what you know is close to you. I'd say angle and distance are more important at first. If your focus runs out about the same time as the timer (white line) then you don't need to put all your xp into dexterity and will then. At the beginning there's a fine balancing act between when is a good time to get the skills/stanzas you need and when to pump up your characteristics scores.

Don't worry about buying the wrong stanzas - its only a small set back and maybe it will be useful some other time. I hope this helps and good luck - I hope you enjoy your stay on Atys.
