Greetings! A few questions for the veterans

Post by shelynda »

First off, sorry if these questions have already been asked before.

A little background..

I'm a bit of an MMO newbie. I started off with World of Warcraft, which gave me a taste for this type of game, and i've found my beloved warcraft is becoming a little stale. Orcs, elves, humans, etc. same thing all the time every game I play. Nothing is ever DIFFERENT! I've had my eye on Ryzom from afar for a long time, and I finally decided to pick it up at the store and give it a whirl.

One thing im struggling with is the movement in Ryzom. I'm used to the standard WASD keys. Any suggestions on a good keymap? Also, I've fiddled around with keys so much, I don't see any options to reset it back to normal. The only solution I see is to delete the character and start over again.

Lastly, what is the most important screens I should keep on my screen? All these multitude of screens is a little confusing at times, I prefer a bit of a cleaner interface.

Any suggestions at all would be appreciated. I'm hoping I can find a more meaningful play experience with Ryzom and make it home.

ps. 2 hours for patching?? ouch.

You found it in a store?! Amazing!!

This I'll leave to someone else to answer. I've never gotten the hang of the WASD - I use the arrow keys (RH) and mouse (LH) at the same time a lot (mouse at home is on the left cuz mouse at work is on the right - hopefully that'll keep carpel tunnel at bay)
Lastly, what is the most important screens I should keep on my screen? All these multitude of screens is a little confusing at times, I prefer a bit of a cleaner interface.
I've got a 17 inch flat screen set at a high resolution - which I've forgotten the exact numbers *of course* - and I've got the hands bar at the bottom left (I use the keyboard numbers row rather than mouse clicks to use it *btw regular #'s correspond, shift+# is the second row on hands bar and ctrl+number changes the active hand bar*, top left is the mob health, under it my health bars etc (team window goes under that when active), then back to the top is the seperate chat and sysinfo windows, far right is the actions box *in icon mode* and under it is the radar. That pretty much leaves the bottom free to watch for aggro or pop up other needed boxes *inventory, tasks, etc*
Any suggestions at all would be appreciated. I'm hoping I can find a more meaningful play experience with Ryzom and make it home.
Best suggestion ever: *thanks to Xenofur for bringing it up* RIGHT CLICK ON EVERYTHING.

I hope you enjoy your stay on Atys!

By pressing k you find the keymap editor. Just put in wasd where the arrows are by default. No, i think you can not reset the keymap. Try to change it step by step.
It might be possible that the settings are saved in the SAVE folder. Not sure ...

First forget about the screens. You will be fine with one at the beginning. Maybe forever. After you learned the shortcuts for the windows everything is fine.

Don't delete the character, there is nothing really special about any configuration. I became generally unhappy with both the WASD and the arrow keys long ago - they just didn't allow the responsiveness that I needed for Counter-Strike. So ever since CS 1.4 or so, I have rebound all my movement for all my games to my number pad. The beauty of the NUM pad is that most default configurations totally ignore it, and at the same time its a big block of keys that are not staggered - allowing for intuitive movement control.
"/" - run/walk toggle
7/9 - turn left/right
8 - forward
4/6 - strafe left/right
2 - backwards
. - sit

(in CS /,*,- are my weapon toggles, + toggles alt fire, 0 jumps, . crouches and Enter is a quick stab - everything I need literally at my fingertips)

This might not work for you, but feel free to experiment with your own key binds. If you did re-bind a key whose default action was useful, you can always re-create that action at another key using the key configuration options - but it does take a little exploration to navigate to the actions you want to bind
Lastly, what is the most important screens I should keep on my screen? All these multitude of screens is a little confusing at times, I prefer a bit of a cleaner interface.
Unfortunately, you will find that most of them are useful. I use an arrangement very similar to the default setup, but adding a minimized Netgraph on the upper left so I can see (hopefully) when I am coming out of a lag spike , and keeping the system window separate from the communication window (its handy for combat and messages regarding action failures). Yes, its a bit of a jumble, but I mitigate the jumble by cutting window opacity WAY down to nearly transparent. Any window that I am not using is close to invisible. Right click on the windows or use the graphical options to change the opacities. Hit the K key for key binds and binding options, and a quick scroll takes you to a section with window hotkeys - plus keystrokes to save your 'desktop' configurations and switch between desktops (F1 - F4). My config F4 has all windows deleted or perfectly clear - its for taking screenshots!

Default? Pfffft! Its *your* game, set it up your way!

Thank you all for your suggestions! I'll certainly give them all a try tonight when I get home. Though I do wish there was a way to 'reset' the default key codes so I can start over again, this configuration posted douph looks interesting! thanks. I suppose i'll get used to everything in time. Thanks again for all your help.

go to ryzom\save folder and delete keys_<char>.xml file (when ryzom is not watching). interface_<char>.icfg has your landmarks (among other things), so dont delete that file.

i user WASD for movement,
q untarget, e cancel action, r leave combat
all main actions are at 1 to 6 (and shift-1 to shift-6 on handbar)
(7-0 i chose with mouse, have hardware cursor enabled ;-)
left mouse button for looking around
right mouse button for changing direction sometimes
left+right mouse button for running

with that setup, i can keep my left hand at keyboard and right on mouse

There is a RESET UI item on the context menue, if you right click the menu.

I know that it resets the windows to the original configuration. I think it resets the keys too, but I don't want to try it on my UI ;)
