it is obviously related to the Kami teleport beacons, so my guess is that it is a more complex interdimensional gate, which, when completed and activated by some unsuspecting homin, will allow Ma-Duk to enter our physical reality and devour the life-essences of all intelligent beings, then, still not satisfied, Ma-Duk will continue to destroy and consume all in his (?) path until the Karavan are forced to destroy Atys in order to save the rest of the universe.
