Hello everyone,
I'm very new to the game, but the little I have played I have a sense it's going to be rich and content oriented, so I want to give it a try.
My main question at this stage is what class to choose and the possibility/relevance to have a multi class character.
For example, I have a lvl 20 fighter right now, and will specialize in melee. But is it common/interesting/relevant to try to progress in the four trees at the same time and have a lvl 20/20/20/20 character, then specializing into the four trees, and so forth?
Also, is there a good guide out there to explain the class and skill system? Because I have no clue what I'm doing so far.
Thanks in advance, I really hope someone will have time to give me a couple fo pointers as the game is a bit complex to get into.
Classes and progression
Re: Classes and progression
Hi and welcome!
Glad to see you've made your way to the Newcomer board
Basically on classes, there are none.
It's not only possible to do everything, but it's encouraged. Usually it's best to pick a favorite area and level that the most, but even that's not necessary.
In general, most people are expected to have a reasonable heal level, to resurrect other dead players you come across, or to revive your team if you happen to be the last one standing after a fight went sour.
But basically do whatever you enjoy. It seems you're most interested in melee fight so work that all you want. The best thing is if you want to take a break from it for a while it's easy to switch and do something else.
I personally like to harvest and craft when none of my usual friends are up for hunting, as hunting is always easier in a team. And when I hunt, I pretty much do everything. I have a highest skill and a lowest, and everything in between. And that makes it easier to fit into teams of all different levels.
The four branches split at various points along the way up- 20, 50, 100, some even at 150
So every split you get more unique levels to work on.
The game is the most interesting when you involve yourself in all four main trees at least a little, but if you find one isn't your style go ahead and ignore it.
And what kind of questions do you have ont he skill system?
Hope you're enjoying your stay on Atys!

Re: Classes and progression
I guess that the confusing part about the classes and trees is that I don't really understand what is a requisite for the class I want to become and what specificities the classes actually offer.
For example:
I took a number of skills from the fight tree that were labeled "required level 0-4", "required level 5-9", etc to level 20.
Then I hit level 20 and a new description of "requisites" appeared for range and melee sub-trees.
So my question is: are all the skills labeled "required" the skills that I need to take in order to become a specialized melee fighter? is it indicative? what advantage do I get when I become a specialized melee fighter? etc
I'm sorry my questions are obscure, but I haven't found a guide yet explaining the class/skill/tree system basics, with examples. It just looks so different from what I'm used to from very simple games such as WoW or CoH... Maybe I'm just confusing myself and should take the skills I want as I go and see.
Thanks again for your answer and for any more advice people have for me.

Re: Classes and progression
That just means you need to be that level for those skills to be available at the trainer. All the skills laveled "required level 5-9" for example will show up at the trainer when you ding lvl 5.degroove wrote: For example:

There is not really any category such as "specialized melee fighter"
There are titles you earn along the way as you level, but they're only dependent on your level. Usually at the branching points +1, like lvl 21, 51, 101, 151 etc. And they don't do anything except give an indication of your accomplishments to others who see it.
The advantages of "specializing" here isn't so much anything that is unlocked suddenly, more just the slow accumulation of stats and skills. Fight is the quickest tree to raise your hit points for example, you'll get an upgrade every 5 levels along with strength. The other trees will raise your hp as well, but less frequently so a pure lvl 100 magician will have a lot less hp than a pure lvl 100 fighter.
Hope that answers your question somewhat?
Basically, just take the skills you want and go and see, as you said
There's really no way to make bad skill decisions that will impair you later on, the game is forgiving that way. You'll have an abundance of skill points at higher levels to pick up things you missed.

Re: Classes and progression
Mostly correct, but there will be times when all the skills are not available at level 5 and may not be available until level 9 (example).sehracii wrote:That just means you need to be that level for those skills to be available at the trainer. degroove, I always tell folks the same thing... decide what you want to be when you grow up then do it... There are certain advantages and disadvantages to specializing as well as multiclassing. I think it best that your good at one thing, then do other things when you are unable to do what your good at.

Re: Classes and progression
At least give all 4 branches a try, they are quite different. The 4 branches have their own trainers as you might have discovered, and the skillpoints earned under Fight can be used at Fighter trainer. If you look at the info on each stanza to buy, you see if it is for Ranged or Melee, Sword or Pike.

Thank you all. I think this is very helpful and quite wise.
The only thing I haven't tried yet because I have not clue how it works is crafting. Is there a 5 step guide out there "how to craft your first widget?". I found something, but it was so complex and detailed I couldn't figure out how to make something basic...
Thanks again !

Re: Classes and progression
Put on the appopriate tool. The you can use the skill/stanza. YOu need to have the right materials. You select the materials and craft them away.degroove wrote:Thank you all. I think this is very helpful and quite wise.

To learn which mat is good for what crafting go to the mat merchant. Every mat has there a description for what it is good.
Thats all . Later you might want to decide the color of your skirt or add bonus. Bonus are stanzas you can buy, and the colors you will learn easy if you craft for a while. Ingame help is always available
