just a small point, all of these games are competitive, even if it's hidden, the competition is always: players vs gm
Only a very, very, very bad GM acts in competition with the players. Some of the worst sorts. The GM is not supposed to be acting in opposition with the players, just presenting them a gauged and enjoyable challenge and story.

k, i maybe put it wrong, but the fact is: players of traditional rpgs do not have simply AI as enemy, all their opponents are under the control of another human, something which is to date not given in any mmorpg
of course i know that a good gm won't play against his players with the notion of "beating them", but he will make sure it won't be a walk in the park for them ;)

No, but a GM must spread his thoughts and ideas across having to run the motions etc of many enemies.

MMO's have the advantage of the bad guys being scripted, able to act independently.

The best way to run an MMO would, IMO, be a combination of both, and less pre-scripted events and more improv.

Just earnestness I think, that came across to me as condescension. Bad call on my part.

You're not talking about Roleplaying, what you are saying is that combat in MMORPG's should only be against AI, not other players. But AI cannot challenge you the way other people can.
No, they are not mutually exclusive. And i dont talk about fighting only the AI.

When playing MMORPG i dont want to think about buttons on keyboard or mechanics or such. In SoR i am a male homin digging something i need, hunting something i need. I want the immersion and story.

Some MMORPG start to offer regional sperated PvP factions. Ok, i wouldnt mind if i get killed cause i huntet in the forrest close to the border of opponent-race. But then i want to get attacked cause of ingame politics. Not for the PvP itself. Even better would be they dont kill me but catch me cause i might be a spy. PvP might work in theory. But as grimjim said: one group of people is able to ruin the game for many, many others. Therefore it might be better to do without any PvP.

Wow! Well said!

I have stated before that until recently, I though PvP could work in SoR.
Recent events have made me see that it has the exact same problems every other open PvP iteration has.

If we had a game full of roleplayers that were dedicated to the story, and mechinisims to make death have consquences for the murderer and the victim; plus the in game capacity to have alternatives to deadly force...like restrint and long term capture, then open PvP might work. Then it might be done right.

But, those are a lot of ifs and conjectures. Until then, I simply do not see many good implementations.

Aya but if they made killing homins fame related then we would just make alts power lvl em to 250 and use them to guard our diggers and take outposts out of guild and team since there fame wouldnt matter then eh :D
