I have also started playing rubbishy old WoW in last few weeks. It has been a load of fun despite the critics and I too find myself dreading logging in to the deserted Dyron desert. (Did I spell the desserts right?)
Oh well. Perhaps we shall all come back one day eh.

Re: Leaving
There is no problem with playing WoW. I played it *before* i came to Ryzom. Its was fun for a while. That where the early days without highlvls and a lot of curious people. Some of the Quests where fun, some where really great most where anoying. After two or tree month it starts to be boring. Wow is just a game, not a "world". So called content is limited there too.monkey3 wrote:

I dont want to list all the MMOs i checked out the last weeks. But atm there is nothing out there that could keep me longer then for some months. To be really true, i am completely frustrated with the mmo industry. There are probably 3 games in the queue worth paying for and only one of them could challange the graphics and design of Ryzom. Time will tell...
About Ryzom it is that my online time decreased. It is summertime, but i also lost interesst in levels. I am not really uber, but i dont like the way to level. And somehow i dont want to dig anymore. Fortunately i am rich enough and can afford just to walk around or attend an event

"None of this fills me with any kind of pleasure or satisfaction anymore and I've only been on randomly in the last month for precisly that reason, there's nothing keeping me interested in the game enough to come on-line anymore..."
I'm about to reach my in game goals in terms of levels, but what's going to keep me coming back is the very community you mentioned. Roleplaying, helping people out, escorting the odd trip, working the mercenary angle for dappers and watching the story unfold as I cease to worry about levels so much.
"The Outposts are being hailed as the saviour of the game, something that will re-ignite the RP aspect of the place and give guilds something to work on and battle against. I disagree."
I agree with you on outposts, I don't think they're going to be the be all and end all. There just isn't that much interest save amongst a few in PvP so they'll just end up being fighting between the same few people or people will settle into the outposts. They'll add additional focal points and colour to the landscape, a few bonuses we're told, but what else really?
"Ryzom-Ring, I'm sorry but what? Why waste time on something like this when there are parts of the game (that were supposed to be working at time of release) that are obviously dodgy or completely missing? I admit, it could be great, it will be the only one of it's kind and I can see the attraction. What I would be more attracted to, however, are problems and missing components fixed and added to the main game. "
Here we part company, I think R2 is the saving grace of Ryzom. Player created content in a proper MMO is a holy grail and I really hope they pull it off. If our community is as creative and skilled as it seems to be people will be able to customise and grow the game and end up with something wonderful that we're all even more invested in. Like Neverwinter Nights on crack.
"Then, strangely, the quest system, the ability of following a story that means something and goes somewhere, took hold of me. I met a few nice ppl and joined their guild. I tried out different professions and different classes and I found it so much more interesting than just choosing a race that has no effect on the abilities of the characters (until 125 ele that is) and seeing where it could take me."
See, I can't see WoW in those terms. The story doesn't mean anything and doesn't go anywhere because its already been done, multiple times, by everyone. Your participation is meaningless, what you've killed today is there tommorow, everything is static and you can't actually make a difference. Plus classes and levels are soooo 1974.
I'll agree I'd like to see some racial divergence in Ryzom but I think that is slowly coming about with the ency missions and their fame requirements. I'd rather see some explicit bonuses though according to race.
"Regardless of the amount of idiots you find on it, the sense of achievment, progress and satisfaction as you complete quests and gain lvls is without parallel within Ryzom. Gaining specific abilities for different classes instead of just the basic ele or melee lvls is so much more interesting and it encourages you to have more than one character so you can see how everything works, what other classes get that you don't etc..."
I can't get a sense of acheivement from a game so heavily instanced, so heavily dependent on missions that are full of character but dependent on you not realising that it doesn't make sense for them to still be there after several thousand people have killed the same big bad. Ryzom may have repetitive missions but they're plausible, they maintain my suspension of disbelief. WoW just seems like one side a one player/group game that everyone plays linearly, then some badly thought out PvP tacked onto the side. Different strokes for different folks but world consistency and a genuinely influenced plot, however rarely done, wins me over.
"I would be very interested to know what other people think; of my decision, of what I've said and how others think about this game regarding the topics I've brought up this rather lengthy post..."
I think you're wrong. I think the content in WoW is illusory.
You know the saying? Give a man a fish he'll eat tonight, teach him to fish and he'll eat forever?
WoW is a fish, Ryzom is a fishing rod, you have to work for your supper, its not just given to you, but you eat forever.

Re: Leaving
Ok, sure, it's time for the high levellers, the 'uber players' to try something else and spread their wings. That's fine, cool, just don't blame it on Ryzom for being incomplete. You've made it this far, well done, now move on without a fanfare or possibly influencing the decision of new players on whether they decide to subscribe or not. Let other players, like me, who have not been playing since Open Beta to take over the reigns of being 'veterens of the game'. I'm 200+ in a couple of skillls but still have a very long way to go. Have you enjoyed the 14+ hours a day you have been playing for how many months? Yes, well just go then with a strong recomendation that anyone who has not played yet TRY IT, and that's it. There is life after death, especially in games!!!!!!!

Two things:
1) Shadow was expressing his frustration at Ryzom, he was not blaming it for forcing him to leave. A lot of what he said was true, and he has found more enjoyment elsewhere, with another game.
2) Ryzom is incomplete. Most MMOs are incomplete - unfortunately, Ryzom is currently at the thicker end of the scale. True, some things are finished and working nicely. Some things feel very rough and unfinished compared to other games.

I'm a player who started in Open Beta. I have one skill above 200, and thats Desert Forage at 208.
The "uber levelers" are very rarely the people who were here at the beginning, so don't blame us.
