"Irc" talk translator

Post by sofiaoak »

Many people learn from irc and other chats to this abbreviation kind of talk. I find it hard to read and understand. What ever is the reason why people use that kind of "talk", is their own business, not mine.

I would like to suggest a new kind of filter translator. So how about translating those "irc" abbreviations to full words. Of course this would be an optional feature for those who want to use it.

Example if You see just one letter or short words in text "u" = you , "r" = are , "gratz" = congratulation , "c" = see , "m8" = mate, "gr8" = great etc.

So if someone writes in chat: u r gr8

It would shown those who use the translator as: you are great

Great idea, but sadly this should be a low priority project for Nevrax. Too many other neat things need to come first.

Implementation thought: Make it a text file or something that a person can edit on their own local machine. A set of defaults can be made available, of course, but this way people can customize it as much as they want. It could translate not only individual "words," but also entire phrases. That would make it suitable for translating certain commonly used phrases from one language an another.

Also, include support for a few "replaceable parameters". For example, instead of translating "m8" into "mate", why not translate it into "%target" which automatically translates into the target's name?

There are programs that will do that for you, but you do have to configure the abbreviation and the translated phrase before it will work.

Why not post up a list of the most frequently used on the newcomer welcome board ? (i dont use irc myself but there are some i use frequently in game chats and forums)

A possible drawback (if i understand the filter idea correctly -it auto replaces abreviations? ) is that ppl wont learn the abreviations (as theyl never see them)

The CoC explictly forbids 3rd party programs like this, if I'm understanding it correctly. So, it has to be added to the Ryzom client OR they need to change the CoC to allow for it.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. (and post linkie to apps that will do this)

*shrug* could be. I don't really see it as using a third party tool "in order to abuse the gameplay," but then, to the pure, all things are pure. :P

I am not even sure it would work.
