I dont think so. Here is what David wrote.
But PvP should slide in more centrally to the game, while not being mandatory
David talked about another 95% of playable area. Now that i have encountered such a huge world, i can say PvP can be completely different. I really hope Nevrax can open another 95% !

From what I can tell Nevrax is planning for a PvP model like there is in Anarchy Online: Small landcontrol area's that can be used for guild battles. This would mean that the only thing you would have to do to not get involved in PvP would be to stay away from outposts when they're in a state of war. In AO the result was that a few "uber" guilds controlled most of the good (high lvl) sites and those that were left were alway under attack. Most of the PvP in AO was over "breadcrums" since the real food was locked away safely...
IF SoR is moving in the same direction I can live with that. The PvP won't be really interesting but it will be very localized and avoidable which is fine with me. Of course it will attract the 733+ d00dz whose single goal in life is to move from one MMO to the next trying to take the fun out of it by ganking and grieving, but we'll know where they are so we won't have to meet them too often...

Fear not, I believe the 2 new areas are only to test the new Faction colours and Kami/Karavan (automatic fame based) titles. And its not the whole regions mentioned, just an area between the 2 faction TPs. No doubt we will have a few events over some weekends before Jena turns up.

However, more PvP may be coming: If yer guild attacks/defends an Outpost, then just being around that outpost will dump you into a PvP zone. BUT because we are all so friendly we shall probly just allocate Outposts and not fight each other, so maybe no need to panic there either.

PvP won't work in this game for ages anyway, for example: If there was enough people playing then demand for PR mats would be high and people would start fighting over them, as it would be the only way to get some. But that aint happening, not so much because we are so nice, but because we are small/close.

And we arent getting many new players that stay, imo, having met some. So fear not, I dont PvP is going to make much of a dent.

Not quite on thread topic, but several people have mentioned this quote and reacted in a positive way. I'm totally the opposite - I wonder why David even mentioned this figure. I haven't read through the letter fully, so I don't know whether this is David's vision for some far off future, or if he's actually commenting on stuff that is built/will be built in the near future.

Atys as we know it is pretty huge - well, huge compared to the player population anyway. We have 5 entire continents (the 5th is spread out, but piece it together and it's comparable I *think*), spanning a large virtual area. To think that this is only 5% of the real Atys just doesn't cut it - what's the other 95%, the same thing with trees in different places? The same mobs but different spawns? Creating new resources of any kind takes time, even if it's creating new mobs using the 'boss mob' technique (same mob, diff. textures, diff. AI values).

And once more of this remaining 95% is revealed, what happens to our current 5%? The playerbase could harldy 'populate' what we have at the moment, if you didn't close the original 5% when some more areas open, the playerbase would be even thinner that it is now. What good is a continent of 5 people?

I respect David for all he's achieved, but I feel this one comment blows that respect to pieces. It simply isn't believable, unless this remaining 95% is empty, boring and devoid of anything new at all.

Sorry to hijack a PvP thread, but since Ryzom will not go full-PvP without losing most of it's players, I don't feel too guilty.

In my experience PvP encourages and attracts the people that cause problems and hurl abuse, doesn't put them off.

Nope I completly agree but it stops people from giving a lot abuse in safe zones, 99% of people in EF are all nice to each other outside of it in something like Dyron they give abuse IF it was all PvP there would be a lot less.

PFFT TBH m8 I think ur having a laff, pvp is fer teh n00bs TBH m8! (or something). Man it makes me cringe reading that back :)

@Carrie, I wouldn't be concerned. I have a feeling PvP will be pushed by the Devs, and they won't be stopping for player feedback (I don't know figures, but I guess 50% or more of the current players don't even do PvP - and the PvP changes keep coming).

I honestly think going too far with PvP will kill the game outright - we currently have a large number of RP players here, and once they start getting random nukes from RP-disliking types when they're minding their own business, they have 2 choices. Either RP in a dark corner, or RP in another game. I think I know which they'll choose (although dark corners can be fun)...
