arrr! hit you with my staff!

Post by sylvanos »

Why are staves so unpopular? (rhetorical)

to my knowledge, there are three gradations of items, with their respective levels of damage. they are close combat (dagger); 1H; and 2H.

The staff is a 1H weapon. the amount of mats it uses in craft (7 shaft and 7 grip) confirms that. But, at the best quality craft, a choice staff crafted with damage rating of 99/100 has a damage less than that of a dagger at 99/100. Reverse applies to larger wepons as well.

Im still in starter towns, so my weps are q20. At q20, a staff with 99/100 damage pre-craft ratinf tranlates to a staff doing 22 damage. A 1H sword, at 99/100 damage pre-craft rating, translates to 63 damage.

As far as i can see, the staff has no redeeming qualities. It doesn't have a bigger sap load (as one might expect, it being a caster weapon?), or a quicker attack speed.. in fact... like i said, a choice dagger does as much damage as it, and has a better hit rate as well.

SO what's the point?

I sent off a ticket, but am wondering about ppl who may have answers, or more questions to add.

Walk softly and carry a big stick.

Not all weapons are created equal.
Sometimes (when I get really paranoid, lol) I suspect that the Devs will one day turn around and make staves and range weapons -really- useful and we will all be stuck with nerfed pikes. :p

Imagine (if you will) Karavan storm troopers coming down from space with really cool guns and light sabers, and only handing them out to people with skills in range and staff. O_o

In the meantime, I do have a q200 1H staff that I use occasionally when I want to be different. ;)

I've wondered about this myself, am yet to see the point of the staff.

You bring up a good point with the sap load. It could make a nice half-way point between amps and melee weapons if done properly. Give it a huge sap load for lots of casting while you beat things over the head repeatedly, but that benefit is offset by the lower damage of the melee.

Although, I think most people would still use better melee weapons and just refill with sap crystals between fights. Maybe the staff could have a partial casting bonus applied. Instead of max speed and power increase stats of 100% like on amps, give it a max of 50%.

I dunno, just thinking out loud :p

Aya IMO Staffs 100% usless, unless ya wanna just have for show, i really cant see it ever getting a uplift into a usable weapon. But hay not all bad some people like to play dress up and maybe the staff was / is just the first of many dress up items to help the RP comunity :D
Who knows what usless but fancy items we may yet get :p

Aya you could make Pike with max sap load insted and it would still do more DMG then a staff :D

How about having staves auto-regenerate their sap load too?

That along with a partial bonus to casting power might make them useful?

I just can't help but think there has to be a viable way of making them a good middle ground between melee and magic. Something you have to wear medium armor with ;)

Staves are great for grinding melee crafting. They only take two different mats to make, so foraging is much simpler.

As for fighting, they could make good practice weapons. If you wanted to try out a new tactic or stanza without killing your target too quickly, just pull out a staff.
