Initial Tutorial... very confusing

Post by jcatlin »

I'm struggling along through the initial tutorial and finding that it's not very helpful. This could just be me, but regardless I'm still stuck hehe. I've managed to fumble along through a few bits and now I'm supposed to go prospect for "basic beng amber". I was having no luck finding any raw materials with basic prospecting so I picked up 5M Range Prospecting and at least I occassionally find sources, but never the one I need. There's no real clue as to where I need to look for this and there's no way to continue with the tutorial until I'm passed this part. What do I need to do here?

I know I can just try things without the tutorial, but I figured I should at least go through the official training before I start asking too many questions around here. It's frustrating when I can't figure out how to educate myself :(

Huh, finding a spot with specific raw material is very hard in the beginning. Even finding a spot that contains right material type can take some time. This sounds very difficult task unless beng amber is in one of the free raw material deposits in starter towns. If you can find beng amber in one of those, you can dig it up, take few steps back and prospect that source again.

You have to take couple of steps back because after extraction you stand on source and don't find it again if you just prospect it.

If memory serves, the newbee amber missions are all along the south edge of the map.

Yes, I just had to try to look for this out of scientific interest. Luckily, I had 10m range and 40 angle prospect for searching.

One deposit of basic beng amber is along south border, directly south of letter 'Z' in Zorai Island if you have map in maximum zoom. There is a group of 3 plant that look like giant asparagus. One huge, one medium size and one small. Beng amber is immediately south of that group.

I have no idea how a new player could find this spot on his own. There is most likely more than one spot around, but still. If starter islands had more stable population there would be some others who could help out and helping each other is best way continuing foraging at mainland.

I agree...while this is one of the most original and visually exciting game worlds I've ever been in, it has one of the poorest tutorials I've ever struggled through. It's as if the expect you to already know how to play the game, I guess because they assume we are all experienced MMORPG players. Every game, however, is someones first, and to keep a player (customer) base you must let them in without slamming the door on their foot. I have, in fact, played several MMORPG's and this one is the most unfriendly.

Well most of the players agree that something has to be done to the newbie islands :) . Because a lot of new players leave them very quickly, they are almost deserted at times. Fortunately, some of us have some alts on the islands, which are there (and stay there) to help newcomers. Next time, check if someone else is on the island (/who command shows all the people in the area in the system info window) and you might want to ask them if they've found the specific mat you're looking for. Then maybe you can team with them and they can lead you to the spot :) .
Also, if i recall correctly, the beng amber on Tryker Island is south east of Dingleton, along the wall. But it's been some time since I was there, so I might be wrong.
Hope you enjoy your stay on Atys ;) .

I am still in my two week free trial, but I have found the tutorial very helpful and extremely easy to follow. It tells you that you will find the beng amber along the cliffs to the southern edge of the island. I found some southeast of dingleton.

I think perhaps people expect all the information they were told to be saved in the 'task' window and it is not. If you do not read and pay attention to everything the NPC says when giving the mission, you might miss some pertinant information. Or if you begin a mission and have to take a break and don't get back to it until the next day, then that is information which would not be in the 'task' window when you check it the next day.

As a noob to a noob, my advice is:
1) don't be in a hurry to leave the island
2) don't hesitate to use the region chat to ask a question
3) if someone else asks a question and you know the answer and no one else is giving a reply, then go ahead and jump in there and answer their question. (I always wait a moment to see if guide is around to answer it or some other more knowledgable player)
4) don't get too attached to your first toon because chances are you'll be re-rolling them fairly quickly as you learn how to edit skills with stanza's and their counterparts and make personal choices as to what is a skill you want/need at lower levels and what you would rather wait on getting until later.
5) whatever job packs you want most to give your toon is entirely up to you and yes others might have idea's or reasons for what they think is the 'best' set of job packs, but no matter what you start with, you can learn the rest, its just a different route to get there. (I say different not difficult because it is all in perspective as to what is easy and what is difficult to each individual.)
I live in my own little world, but it's ok. They know me here!

In my opinion the tutorial is nice, and the steps are easy to follow and accomplish, except....

The harvest task that requires you to find "basic beng amber".

If I remember correctly you find it on all starter islands at the southern edge of the map. There you should find it at several spots, so you only have to walk along the edge and prospect until you find it.

The backside of the mission is, that you need to travel to the southern part of the starter island, and that might be quite dangerous.

I prefer to do start with the combat, magic and team welcomer missions, and when I think I'm strong enough I do the harvest mission :D

Thanks for the replies everyone. I basically set it aside for the time being after asking in region chat and no one else knew the answer either ;) However that did lead to my being invited to my first team here and that was much more interesting anyway hehe. Got the rudiments of low level combat down and quickly gained some fighting levels.

Once I feel confident I can keep myself alive further south on the starter island I'll head down to the southern cliff wall and see about that basic beng amber.

Note: After a while I did come to realize (just as someone else in this thread pointed out) that you have to pay very close attention to NPCs since not everything is logged to a chat window. That's kind of fun in that you do have to pay attention as if it's a real conversation, but it's very impractical for those of us with hectic lives :( I'm often multitasking out of necessity while I play and it's either that or not play at all I'm afraid. /shrug

Really it's all ok for me since I'm self motivated to move forward and find people to group with, but it's a shame that SoR is not very friendly for new players.

actually, I thought NPC chat message are still logged to the chat window. Try checking the around chat.

FYI: it's best to leave your chat on the "User" tab though, which by default will show chats from all tabs.
