Now...can this game be compared to DAoC? ...
There are no classes in Ryzom, it's a skill based system thus some of your questions about classes cannot be answered. It is you who determines how much of a fighter or mage you are.

In general Ryzom has a much steeper learning curve than DAoC and you better decide for yourself whether you have the patience to learn a fairly complex game system (much more complex than DAoC) and a new world and a new storyline. You do not tell us what you like in a game thus it's difficult to say whether I would recommend the game to you.

Personally I like the game and hope it will have a bright future.

Same structure? Does the game grab you instantly?
Are you able to level successfully solo? Does grouping speed up levelling?
And for my personal joy, are the magic class über compared to tanks? (melee classes) (Of course a tank slays a mage in melee easy...but I mean range wise they are good classes)
Or, and I hope, are the classes fairly even?
This might sound like dumb questions, but I would appreciate an answer.

Never played DOAC, so I cna't help you there, but I can answer some of your other questions.

The game really grabbed me early and has not let go. The atmosphere alone will blow you away.

You can solo with little problem, even as a mage, if you are clever and careful. Grouping CAN speed up leveling, but it can also really slow it down, depends on your group.

I play an offensive caster and I can hold my own in a fight. Because we cannot wear heavy armor without SERIOUS pens, most creatures will kill you with little problem IF they can get close enough to do so. Really it depends on how well you can edit your spells (yes you can EDIT all of your spells to make them longer range, quicker, etc.) As far as how things will look in higher levels, no one has really got there in release yet (many on the NA server are hovering in the 50-60's right now out of a possible 250.) But worry not, as a caster, you can deal out some serious damage but you pay for it by being weak. Hope this helps and hope to see you in game, many of us are having a great deal of fun.
