Dodge or parry?

Post by filtern »

I am to start a bit with my melee fighting 2h Piercing.

I have a higher dodge than parry. At the mobs I am currently fighting, red area, I dodge about 40 or 50% of the attacks it seems. I do this in Light armour.

Is this better protection than using a good Heavy armor with my current constitution at 140? What provides the most protection, and what should the toggle between dodge/parry be in the settings?

your dodge is based on your highest combat skill and your parry is based on your highest melee skill so if your a high lvl magic user then using dodge to lvl up with melee at low lvls is great

once your parry reaches the lvl of your dodge tho its prob best to use parry as you can get + number on the parry stat on heavy armour where dodge is only able to reach 0 so it doesnt lower your dodge

Proves what I suspected, Thanks, Diggin.

Seems like I can use this tactic for quite some time.

BTW; is there possible to craft Heavy armours with no dodge penalty?

Really depends on your setup. If you have max boosted q250 light armor with +2 dodge each part then use that. If your light set is much worse, you might consider using heavy armor with dodge mod 0.

EDIT: Yes, it is possible to make heavy suit with no dodge penalty. It is not even particularly hard.

just press P everytime you change what you wear/hold. if your parry ratio is higher, then select parry ;)

I look at it as though when you are in heavy armour with a sword you are going to be quite encumbered. Therefore dodging becomes less easy and parry becomes necessary. When you wear nothing/light armour, you are less "weighed down" and thus becoming a dodgy guy! those numberrs in character info seem to reflect this

I wish i knew about this earlier cos i was on dodge mode all the way to level 200 melee.

Maybe its just me imagining things (again) but i find that i dodge ALOT when leveling my melee (melee 115, heal 189, so 187 dodge in HA) when im pulling. Ie im dodging alot in the pull itself. Once i get back to my team and start whacking away i dont dodge anywhere near the same amount so i was thinking it could be related to movement and standing still.
Dodging when moving, parrying when standing still.
I DO dodge when i stand still, but its about 20% of the dodge ratio when im running with a mob trying to hit me

For the sake of completeness, just in case (it doesn't apply if you are the only tank) Bear in mind that in order to dodge the mob has to be attacking _you_ : if another tank gets the aggro he'll be the one dodging, and thus being able to use the attack after dodge. In other words, assuming the rest equal and set up to dodge, the tank with highest dodge value should be taunting and getting aggro on himself

Parry is based on the level of your mele skill your currently using to be more specific. That is a 250 Master Pikeman using a secondary skill (lets say 200 sword) will have the lvl of the currently used mele skill as their parry. So in the example of our 250pike/200 sword using his sword skill in combat would have a 250 dodge value and a 200 parry value.
