I did a test when I was at 165 range with 190q ammo and a 170q rifle, awhile back before I took my leave of absence. I did it against Ron Storm who was around 200 melee, and Basic (who was about the same back then), and the old Juggernaut who was well above 200 at the time. The results where they were regenerating hp faster than I was dishing out damage. When I entered the gladiator event in range (as the higest rated range figher/crafter in the game at that time). It took about 8 minutes to waste my opponents who at that time were not as highly rated as I was in range. One pulled a big butt launcher fired a full bag of launcher ammo at me, then started using a rifle against me. Well the launcher did about 30% damage to my health bar, and against the rifle I was regenerating faster than he could damage me. My rifle with 190q armor piercing ammo took me eight minutes or so to waste the fella after he was out of ammo.
How does that make rifle on par with either melee or magic.
As far as shooting someone from a range of 50 meters, they just run in and wack you a few times and OoOo, unless you think you can take the ten seconds to change weapons from gun to swords/pike, or you hope they just don't run off the screen and then come roaring back in.
Now I have not even mentioned the range protection skill.
For pvp range currently is a joke.
Auto launcher, I could not do more than about 40% damage to a good warrior. Assuming you don't get alot of successful dodges and parries (the superman effect).
A good Piker would run in and dust a range fighter before he could even drop his weapon and put a sword in his hand. Like 4-5 hits and down. In the gladiator events Yurtalaptis who was around 210 piker then, was cutting threw melee folks in less than 30 seconds, and many in about 15 seconds.
What chance does a range fighter have against that, when you can maybe do 375-450 points damage if you don't miss. And your opponent is standing there with 3000+ life points (with jewlery and armor), and regenerating like mad, and he/she is wacking you for those big 750+ (alot of plus sometimes) damages.
Now let's talk about the damage the auto launcher and launcher can do, where you can carry 3 clips of launcher and 5 clips of auto launcher max, then you are wieghted down. So, you are going to be the big butt kicker in gang warfare...not. You fire into the group with the auto launcher/or launcher...and hope you don't have collateral damage to any nearby aggs...and do a big 50-60 points damage per person per clip if you have no misses. Or maybe you get lucky and get the big 165 or so damage. WTF. That is suppose to be heavy damage??? That warrants the weight of the ammo? O, I got it, I am suppose to carry a packer, run out of ammo no problem, change weapon to ammo maker and start crafting ammo? And a packy if the launcher/auto-launcher ammo is already made...the packy can't carry that much. And it takes time to transfer it to your bag, and from the bag to the hands, and aim and fire away...and your dead by then, of course they killed your packy first, now you can't run and have your ammo supply follow you.
I have tried every trick I can think of and have heard of...and have not been able to make guns viable for pvp.

Re: Saying good-bye
when did you try this out???
because im 163 in melee and in pvp i get a max damage of 400 and hell no people are not regenerating that fast.
and i use a sword not pike
for the ranged i cannot say that much because i just started that. but it seems that i shoot faster with my rifle then i can hit with my sword +the new stanza i hit lots more then other people of my lvl in other skill threes. this is also bercause i use a stanza that you get at 150-160 that i could get from melee.
so maybe you should try it out again because it doesnt seem accurate what you are saying. well maybe not up to date anymore.
(against mobs i do about 800damage with melee)

Re: Saying good-bye
I tried testing range again, results for guns in PvP are still pretty bad. I tested the launcher/auto-launcher/rifle. Using 190q ammo. The results aweful for the auto-launcher---defintely not a weapon that warrants only being able to carry 5 clips of ammo. The rifle and the launcher did about comparable damage....the bodes bad for the launcher which I can only carry 3 clips of ammo for. So the rifle still the best of the 3....and it still sucks is my opinion...although the run and shoot aspect is cool.defalgar wrote:when did you try this out???

Oh no, one more ranged thread... Ranged just sux atm. I hope they get fixed it eventually as promised (spring clean & outposts were higher priority). Sooner the better.
Only applications I see for ranged atm are:
- Run&shoot solo
- Run&shoot in team if there is no tanks
- Hit fast casters to disrupt their spells in PvP
- AoE weapons in PvP & invasions etc if someone could grind those lvls high enough to make any difference (and force teammates to carry your ammo
- act as inefficient tank
Dunno how it would work with team consting mostly of ranged fighters. Enough shooters to make very fast low xp kills.

Re: Saying good-bye
When I used to play Ultima Online, I once hired about 15 npc archers, and teleported into a hot zone where the guild house of an enemy guild we were at war with was. The spot where I landed stacked all the archers on top of me, and only my character showed on the screen, until I hit the macro key for saying "all Kill", and then the archer team came alive and wiped out about five players. Then I got the brain storm, ummm, if I can do this so can five of my guild mates and we all have 15 archers, and we will just have a mage caste a "gate", and we will all walk in the gate and be at the enemy guild front door, and wreck havoc. This was when we had a guild mate with gm level hiding skill, function as the spoter who told us when the enemy guild was all out in front of their guild house high fiving and goofing off. As a result of this tactic, EA eventually changed the program and limited the number of npc's I could hire at one time, down to about five. I am sure it has changed again since I quit playing UO over a year ago to come here and play full time (might have been a mistake, only a little more time will tell).mmatto wrote:Oh no, one more ranged thread... So, yes I have always thought a rifle team could be a powerful force, if the guns were any more powerful than a pea shooter.
