see this is what you should do
you should always have at least a duo, if you dont youll end up sitting around all the time trying to heal up, however you can circumvent this for the newbie levels in the following method
you can go to the mainland at level 1 if you want, there are plenty of suckling yubos and everythign the newbie island has, on the mainland, except for weeny and puny carnivores
my quick start solo method is to pick the full crafting pack, use the verstile anything mats, sell to make your first bit of earnings, about 16k. with that you can buy a good q20 weapon, preferably one over 70-80 max damage. Then go on a killing spree of sucking yubos and suckling messab/gnoof, whatever. Most things you should kill in one hit. After 5 levels go buy accurate attack 1 and increase damage 1/2 and put them in the same stanza, ask someone for help if you dont know how to edit stanzas
With this you will easily get to level 20 or so, soloing without worryign about getting hurt even. At this point you want to make friends and start joining groups and killing big bad things. once you have a group of friends you can get in to magic, but with todays resist rates you need a group to level magic until you are the uber level of 125.
harvesting is not in my scheme because it is not necessary unless you want to be a hermit, or you are supporting a guild, like in real life you only need to provide enough credit to society(for money) as for what you want (to buy things)
that is how you start this wonderful game quickly and smoothly

Re: Newbie help
I agree with all of the above.
Except...
(but maybe I'm a hermit??? .... who knows
)
Except...
I enjoy harvesting... its actually fun to search and find new mats that will help your crafting. Then exploring how to create cool items, with different specs... etc. etc. etc.... I for a long time was self-sufficient... i provided my own everything... until about lvl 100 ele, and i started buying...amitst wrote:harvesting... is not necessary unless you want to be a hermit, or you are supporting a guild, like in real life you only need to provide enough credit to society(for money) as for what you want (to buy things)

just to add...gamble2 wrote: 1) At what point, skill progression wise, should I leave the newb island?
die a lot in newbie island and enjoy doing it

it help when you get to mainland. if you can avoid every mob there, sneak pass them, see them from far... then you ready for mainland.
Re: Newbie help
If you're going to stay and level melee for a few levels, buy the best weapon you can use. Player made is best, but the economy on the starter isles is pretty dead now days and there may not be anything available. The difference between the starter dagger and a NPC quality 10 weapon is huge.gamble2 wrote: 2) Is it worth it to purchase weapons/armor on the newb island?
I wouldn't bother with armor or an amp (unless a decent (choice) player made amp is available cheap). After buying a weapon or two, save your dappers for the better stuff available on the mainland.

I agree. Leave newbie Island as soon as y our comfortable with attacking/moving around/ quartering/ digging etc...
The benefits of mainland are you will have acess to much better equipment. Just dont wander too far into bigger agro mobs and stay close to towns with the little yubos running around. It is boring but at least you will be near lots of players till your stronger to join hunting parties.
