It's not like it holds much info on the game, nor does it seem to really relate to the official webpage of Ryzom. I'd expect it to be more in the same style as the official webpage...

If I missed anything on another forum; my bad, but this does seem to be weird, didn't even hear rumors about this before i read this thread.
someone made a whois on that page, look in the e3 thread, there is the proof, this webpage is from nevrax.

As for Ryzom-Ring: i need to see it with my own eyes before i believe it :)

I personnally expected alot more then this announcement. Including beta I've been with this game for over a year. Many of us are STILL waiting for Nevrax to pony up the stuff they promised us would be in the game at retail launch. Now comes along an announcement where players are going to be allowed to create there own zones and all I can think is that Nevrax is so strapped for cash they can't even pay developers for new content so they devise a way to get a bunch of unpaid laborers to work for them.

you guys don't really see how revolutionary the idea of modding cabability for a graphical mmo's would be, do you? All you see is, OMG NEVRAX can't afford programmers so let the players do it! That, I can be almost certain, is not the case at all.

This, if it ever come to pass, is the wholy grail of gaming for the mmorpg genre. If you never heard of Neverwinternight mod community or the Warcraft III or Halflife or Morrowwind mod communities and how rich those games became (in term of gaming) because of players modding, then you defn should google around a bit and check them out.

I posted this in another thread about the Ryzom Ring thing but as this seems to be the main thread about it, I figured I'd throw it in here.

The way I look at it, they probably didn't have time to do any quests/events/story development/etc. because they were busy working on the tools to allow the playerbase to do these things.

One of the big upsides I see is that if they're making tools that are good enough for the general public to use to design content, then that's also probably going to make it tons faster for Nevrax to add content themselves.

I've read over and over again that one of the weak areas in most mmorpgs are the tools that allow easy creation of content. Naturally, these tools usually take a back seat to the core game engine and design itself. That's a big factor in why most games are plagued by "lack of new content". It's because they don't have easy interfaces that allow people that aren't core developers to add content. So they get stuck in a situation where only the core team of developers can add content but they're too busy fixing bugs and working on the underlying mechanics to create content.

It seems like Nevrax has devoted a significant part of this past year's new development effort on solving this exact problem. Unfortunately, the players have been the ones to pay the price by playing in a fairly stagnant world.

If they throw these tools out there and rely on the players to create all of the content, then I don't think it's going to improve things vastly for many of the same reasons people have already posted. However, if their plan is to turn part of their development team over to using these tools to create new "official" content, then I think it could be a HUGE improvement. It could mean we'll finally be getting the regular content and storyline updates in the game that were initially advertised.

This is an excellent strategic decision from a business point of view. Nevrax products are SoR and NeL, and both will benefit from better tools for creating content. NeL benefits as the developers of other games can get to market faster, and perhaps more game developers will use the engine. SoR becomes a better product because both developers and players are creating content, and because the developers can create more content in a given period of time.

On a completely different note, from the picture above "Imagine" it looks like one of the zone options will be "clothing optional."

Ryzom Ring is a natural extension once you see Nevrax's promotion of their Nel Launcher system for creating MMORPGs.

Ryzom is just the test bed.
