IMO a criminal does not commit a crime because, in 90% of cases, he fear the punishment. When a punishment is made public, is an example for all to NOT DO THAT. That's why the criminals had public executions in the past.

Personally I saw a lot of rules breaking, the only thing I reported / "rat-ed" were when someone has named her char "FluffyPussy".
But I've seen bugs exploited, items sold for real cash, even characters sold for real cash. Harassment, pofanity, even bots (tou, bots only in noob island).
Naming policy is broken daily anyway.

Having a public anouncement: "That player harassed another players, he was punished by losing 5 levels" will sure help in avoiding certain attitudes. Of course, that will increase the number of reports, but that's not our problem, is staff's :P

Fortunately there's this thing called customer confidentiality. It means that what happens between the customer and company is only for them to know unless the customer decides to share or the company is forced to share (usually by law or court order).

Somehow I don't think going back to public execution way of showing off our criminals is really a good direction for the community to go. I'd really hate to see what would happen if we did do that. Lynch mobs is the first phrase that comes to mind.

Both FluffyBunnies and Joe's Bagpipe and Hotdog Emporium I find rather grating and jarring to run into in game as they completely break the mood and suspension of disbelief for me.

Silly names aren't against the code though, unfortunately ;P

well it doesn't breach any customer confidentiality as you aren't naming the person or saying any information about them sides their username

the person reporting the incident should at the least be informed as without that information there's no evidence of anything being done.

using a "confidentiality" thing is a cop out almost as bad as when you have a reproducable bug and they say it's your system that's the problem not the game

If the public execution makes you to think at Will Lynch, what would make you to think at Texas Rangers? :)

lol, rushin, I'm goin to create a char and name him "BigJohn" or "StrongDick" :P

PS I'll stick to my oppinion that the public humiliation and anouncements of punishments will help in preventing breking of rules.

My opinion could be a bit biased on this subject, as some might know, but i honestly believe the GM's "try" to do a good job. Even so, even in real life, the truth depends from where you look at it. The previous events some people might fear ill drag back (im sure :p ), are water under the bridge, but from this side it was very annoying to see injustice (lvl 250 off aflict seems to work on GM's) go on and etc. But im sure they did the best they could. The only thing i dont think they realize is that what was happening was kinda global, like it proved to be. Instead they just cut out the offended party cause of their reaction, which i know was rough. Anyway its water under the bridge, but sometimes you just have to "eat and shut up" like we say in my country. But don't forget if well done, you can turn the offender into offended real quick. Only thing you have to do is be tricky, and thats a shame, cause GM's don't know everything, they just see whats thrown their way. And ill shut up now.

Its not a cop out, its a legally binding item. If I got in trouble I sure as hell wouldn't want anyone knowing.

I still stand by my thought, that many seem to agree with, that its none of our business. GMs do their job. Its none of my business who got what punishment.

actually if you get in trouble, ie arrested EVERYONE is entitled to know, so since we're not saying your name, your real address or your real anything, unless you by choice have used your real name as your user name.

how is saying "we suspended user 15264 for abuse of the game" an abuse of privacy in the least?

as for the legal agreements, a click thru agreement isn't legally binding in the least, there's a whole lot of stuff they have to prove and they can't. if you want to think it does, then go for it but microsoft's team of lawyers didn't want to test it in court cause they knew they'd lose

as for the gm's doing their jobs i've yet to see it, all i get is cop outs and excuses and frankly if this keeps up i'm just going to not resubscribe to the game and demand my money returned for failure to fulfill a contract
