Just want to start a conversation. One thing that amazes me about this game is the trekking from one continent to the other. I have never experienced anything like it in an MMO other than maybe the beginning of FFXI before everything got nerfed.
A group of people coming together with the risk of DP simply to move new players from one area to another? Its an amazing social paradigm. Did the devs expect this? God knows they put enough roadblocks in our way. My most memorable moments in this game have been trekking from one cont to another. Whether it was with a 3 man team or 30 I always enjoy my time.
Someone in my guild who feels the same way said "as long as that is in the game they have my money" or something to that effect and I can't agree more.
I remember fresh from refugee island how I wanted to explore the other types of lands and was told "it's impossible to get there alone." I balked and promptly died over and over again trying to cross Loria. On my first trek I was simply baggage, a newbie that was left dead on the ground till all the aggro got cleared, my only contribution a pittance of healing of maybe 80hp a shot. That trek didnt make it all the way, we wiped 3 times in Heretic Hovel and called it a night. But I was hooked. This was something to work towards, this was something that you could do to directly affect the world. People are depending on you to help them, this is what adventuring is about! To be part of something greater and achieve a goal with a group of people.
I have been in many treks since then. Some better than others, some lost, most won, but always always having fun. I have refined my paths, I know which seasons are best, I can see a field of mobs and find an invisible line through their aggro. I have learned these things. Thats where the important factor is, I have gained a skill not through the actions of a repetitive task my virtual character did over and over again but with my own knowledge and practice. Its a beautiful thing more developers should take notice.

That's one of the things I love in these games too. There was similar content in everquest, basically doing events that take a lot of people working together, after which you all get access to new zones. That was the only thing I really liked in that game :P
I'd love to see more content like this in Ryzom too. Nothing like the sick web of prerequisites and backflagging that Planes of Power was in Everquest, but I'd love to see a lot of regions in new expansions require at least just fighting there first to have access. And maybe one or two be a real challenge 8)

Yes, its one of the coolest things in this game.
I sure hope there will be more regions to explore soon. Its much more fun then just gaining xp...

Dang, I thought this was a star trek thread! live long and proper! \\ //
j/k,totally agree with you. The most fun I had in this game is traveling. And the game was so awesome when I was just a nubbie. The game did start to lose its luster after I have pretty much gotten all the TPs though, so
Regardless of what people said about how difficult the mobs are in this game, I think one of the reason trekking is so much fun is because of this difficultly level. Traveling in the wilderness of Atys is an adventure in survival. Heck, on one occasion, I heard a new player say (on their first experience of traveling from Matis to Fyros), "I feel like I am in an Indiana Jone movie."
There can be no higher compliment than that, Nevrax.
(... now, if they only implement an incentive for lugging packers across atys ...)

I too feel the treks are amongst the coolest things in game, if not the coolest. Even more, it seems that much effort was put in desining the places we go through, to make it very dificult, at least at noob lvls.. (in the original arispotle tryker land was shut for a looooong time after all other regions had been visited, so thats a good example), but not only at those lvls though. I've made the tryker > matis journey in a team of 4, and was in the wipe of a 200 (according to Xorte) group at the same places, with aproximate lvls. This shows what everyone feels about this thread topic, that its not something achieved only by brute force. Indeed, travelling through Atys requires wit, patience, a lot of try and error etc. All this, with the plus that to get to one region the first time you go there, made a preety good game start for me.

hehe, they're also a blast to lead as well...i remember some distant time ago when i first stepped out into Atys and stood in awe at the sights. A place so vivid, beautiful, and living...
this is when I decided that I would become a scout. Learn to sense the mob movements before they even happen! So that one day, I would be able to teach someone how to travel as I have. Or to be able to lead fellow homins to places they have never seen and experience all the sights that Atys has to offer.

Re: I <3 Trekking
I said this a few time before, but I will say it again anyhow.
It seems that it's so much easier to go between cities in Zorai, Tryker, and Matis. It is *hard* in Fyros, especially at low levels. Heck, I still worry going from Pyr to Thesos by myself.
Going from Pyr to Dyron and Thesos is an initiation rites shlick for us sand dwellers. And they're fun too. It's so boring to run (or swim) from one city to another in the other lands, with the exception of Matis, where band of roaming gingos and ragus can be quite deadly.
With that said, Tryker is handdown the hardest continent to get out of or get into. But once you're there, you're pretty safe with all that water around.
I am also curious to why Fyros have only 3 cities (1 capital and 2 outposts) while the other 3 civs have 4 cities each counting the capital.

Re: I <3 Trekking
i love going around the world, now that i'm higher lvl i do it with impunity mostly
however i don't like going with a large group of ppl, especially non-guildies and here's a few reasons why
they never listen to you (ie don't attack anything or stay here and don't move)
they are about as stealthy as a bull in a china shop
they move too slow and lolligag around thereby pulling aggro and possibly whiping the group
as soon as a new area appears they go charging off and getting aggro'd and party gets wiped
now these things don't always happen but most of the time do. when my guild does a tour, we have minimal wipes. when the non-guild tours happen i hear of lots of wipes, now is this cause of the above reasons
now i'm not saying we're perfect or i'm perfect when i go adventuring but i never been one to go charging heads first into an area full of aggro, usually when i do it's an accident or i wasn't paying attention to where i was
but adventuring is a ton of fun, i want to do more and i don't even mind getting max dp from it

I think it is because it is the largest city and it have up to q150 items and mats for purchase.vinnyq wrote:I am also curious to why Fyros have only 3 cities (1 capital and 2 outposts) while the other 3 civs have 4 cities each counting the capital.
The Burning Desert is also the only place where there are cities outside level 50 areas (if memory serves correctly).
