it's free I think, but I don't recommend it. It's really lacking in content and *VERY* buggy.

I've been a subsciber for a long time. The graphics are fantastic but the down-time is hideous! I've only levelled up once a year, it's purely skill based and yet I see people around me getting twinked up to higher levels than me all the time. There's too many weddings, perma-death and sometimes even skill loss when your hit-points get reduced to far. But it is addictive. Sometimes I forget to log off for days at a time. I think I'll keep it on; even with Ryzom I can just about scrape the subsciption every month.

Indeed, that game is really special. There are also some guilds that will hunt you down for every PK you do on your own. While other guilds actually expect you to do as many PK's as possible. It is certainly a strange game, but one just can't get away from it.
But to add some more thoughts to the subject of PvP in Ryzom:
As expected, this thread has already received a lot of replies. What was NOT expected is, that in the pool the extreme anti PvP choice will be the single most chosen one, even though I have expected that the majority will be for restriction of PvP
Even though I don't do it, I can understand that some might find interest in fighting other players. As long as this is in a form of duels or in arenas, I have nothing against it either. My problem with open PvP areas is, that there will always be people who will abuse it. Or at least not behave like a sensible person. As for having to accept that I *might* get attacked in a PvP area, I would like to point out that every day you step out on the street, or get in the car, you have to accept that you *might* get hurt there. But I hope we all agree that it is still a very big deal when someone *does* get hurt out there.
Some people can't understand why getting killed in PvP area upsets people this much, since it doesn't give death penalty. Yest the way I see it, DP is never a really big deal. The big deal at any death is when you see people on your radar that can't be bothered to rezz you. It is of course usually not due to indifference or malice, but the bad feeling remains. Therefore the bad thing about the death, any death, is not the DP or even the bit of wasted time, but the people who let it happen. Or made it happen in case of PvP. It is emotional, not rational. And, as one of the posters here puts it: people can't stay friendly and unemotional about open PvP.
The argument has been raised that there is a serious number of people who won't play Ryzom without PvP. Even that more PvP would bring a lot of new players to the game. Well, based on the pool on the top of this page, I would say more PvP would also get a number of current players OUT of Ryzom. So the net result might not be that great you one would imagine. But the argument itself is rather thin, as you can see in the article that has been mentioned already in this thread.
Some point out correctly, that it is not the possibility of PvP itself, but the players that turn it into a problem. So how could players be sensible about PvP in Ryzom as it currently is? Here is something I have thought of just today: The Prime Roots hold something of value- the good materials. It is quite understandable that people would like to secure those for themselves.
A guild could very well declare an area there their property in forums and in region chat there. It would set guards and patrols to make sure only their own harvesters would dig there. Then, if a harvester would trespass, he really shouldn't be surprised if he gets killed for it.
Of course, other guilds wouldn't watch idly for long. They would challenge the first guild, there would be alliances and guild wars ...
Come to think of it, this is exactly what people expect to see when the Outposts come. Yet they could have it already, if they wanted. Si why don't they? Could it be that there are *not* that many people who are looking forward to such wars?

Re: PvP = Fun?
I'm not looking forward to outposts all that much. What I'm looking forward to is the extension that will allow players to interact with the world.
But what I want from outposts is PvE stuff, a basis for RP, and cool stuff for my guild. I also love building and customizing things, something that has been lacking in this game. Not PvP, and not GvG. My guild will be choosing outposts strategically - trying to find outposts with low demand that will still be useful and fun for us. Also coordinating outposts with allies sounds like fun. As for PvP? I'm not a huge fan of it (thought it can be fun if it's light-hearted). Usually I only really enjoy it a lot when there is RP value to it (and "we want that sup mat" doesn't count as RP value to me).
I would be interested in knowing what everyone else is looking for in outposts. I think the PvP folks might be surprised to find that those PvP battles are not what people want from outposts.

When I played MUDs, it was always two games to look forward to ... days to weeks to get a char to max level, where there was no more improvement, and you could then play the second "game," which was making use of your high level character to do events, farm, PK. Ryzom hasn't really had any of the second game at all, but outposts will change that. I can't say how much I want them to be around 8)
Re: PvP = Fun?
Its hard to say, Saiwin. Part of me just wants new content and outposts, good or bad, is essentially a huge addition and change to the game play.
I'm looking forward to the teaming and purpose that the outposts should bring. I'm sure we've all been in that situation where we're chaining a mob and racking up xp but then all of a sudden there's a pop right ontop of us and everyone is scrambling around to contain the aggro and work together(xp be damned). Isn't it a great feeling when you clear everything and you know it was because of good teamwork? I'm hoping outposts brings me that feeling more often. That hectic scramble to take a landmark or defend it, it can be a rush. My experience in this type of game play comes from Shadowbane, that game had a lot of problems but it sure wasnt the way outposts were taken.
My other hope is that outposts will bring us more emphasis on the story. Whether that be defense against Kitin invasions or attacks from tribes I want the feeling of having been a factor in the winning of a greater battle because of the outpost we hold. From what I read pre-release of the game this was what the devs were aiming for. Its more than likely changed but I am hoping for it :)
I want a purpose to lvl my guy past 200 and ganking harvesters in PR is not a purpose. Taking part in small events with 60+ people where your level kinda doesnt matter is not the purpose either. To me at least :|

Re: PvP = Fun?
5. PvP is bad, Ryzom doesn't need it at all. : 27.27%
I hope, these 30 percent, understand about what ask.
In other words "Remove PvP in Umbra" =
Put BACK 2-3 times more agro on each spot
Return Kitin Patrol
And show to "Generation 'Umbra PR Forager'", what real hell means, when on each spot loads agro, and 80 % of sources each 8-10 minutes 'visit' Kitin Patrol...
Also remove, added due 'PvP', "some sweet spots", without restriction "min extraction stanza" and etc, etc
There is other PR.. not PVP.. Why you go to PvP zone and complain about it.
Disclaimer: Haven't attacked any player in PvP zone, and i'm not PvP fan.

Re: PvP = Fun?
Ok... i played teh Game Shadowbane... - all of it pvp except certain towns... i have done one on one honorable... i was a thief and have done the sneaky i ahve done the guild vs guild to protect my home and to destroy theres... Honestly its a pvp zone... peopel complain about it... but its there for a reason... PR is not to be treaded nicly its a zone that is to be treaded carefully...
Look at it this way... this game is also on skill of the player... a person killign a creature becomes boring... in PR it allows the people to give challenges...
I myself will not PVP... i am in a nuetral guild...
Random PKing... is kinda mean... Just going aroundl ookign for targets is not the best way to handle things.. but it happens i am over it...
Playing a character that has a hatred for your race and you get killed you should have saw it coming... and honestly when i am in pr which is not often enough... i will like to have a friend to have for protection
PVP = fun? yes to a extent... If you dont like it stay out of pr
