PvP = Fun?

PvP = Fun?

Post by manya »

Killing other players is a hot issue, as one of the longest active threads on this forum shows. So now I would like to see where the average opinion is.

I personally am against any PvP, so you will find my vote at the very bottom of the available choices. This is also why I am rather concerned about the upcoming of the Outposts. A lot of people seem convinced the Outposts will be just something to fight for/ over. If that will come true, Ryzom will probably lose a lot of its appeal fir me. There are already people around, talking about 'wars' and 'enemies' when speaking of other guilds. Does the Hominkind on Atys really not have enough problems without waging wars among themselves?

Currently the PvP is very limited, yet it still causes quite a bit of argument. I often see people state the argument that by going to a PvP area, like Prime Roots, you accept that you can be killed and have no right to complain about it when you do. I don't see this argument as valid though. Because there is a difference between *implicit*acceptance of the possibility of getting attacked and *explicit* agreement to fight other people.

With implicit agreement I don't really expect to get attacked, in spite of the possibility that I might be. I actually expect that other people will NOT attack me. When they do I would certainly like to know why, so that I might be able to avoid it in the future. That is why a completely random attack is so upsetting. Besides, Atys is a dangerous enough world as it is, why do we need to make it even more dangerous ourselves?

It is different with explicit agreement. That one is given when one accepts a Duel or goes to a place like Arena, where one generally doesn't go for any other reason than fight. If I get killed under such conditions, there really is no reason for me to whine about it.

I am not trying to tell anyone how they should play, I know my opinion is in the extreme and don't expect many people to share it. What I do expect is one or the other of the people who happen to like PvP to come here and defend their right to have their way of fun. Everyone should be allowed to enjoy the game in their own way, but if someone can't have his fun while those said PvP'ers are around, who is to decide whose fun is more important? If you will only find it fun if you kill me, and if my fun will end by it, who should have his way? Does this have to be such an extreme opposition?

The issue is hot, so the flames are likely to burn high in this thread as well. But maybe we will be lucky and see some actual opinions and reasoning here as well.

I did not choose the one where PVP is allowed everywhere except towns as this reminds me of UO so many years ago...

PVP is fine, but it's not for everyone and there will always be those who want it to complain as it might not work the way "They" want it, which again is fine by me as that decision as to the "rules of PVP engagement" should be left only to the company making the game.

HHmmm, this is looking more and more like that other PVP posting :(

Well i voted right in the middle.. I think that PvP has a place in Ryzom, i also think that the area's that are currently PvP make sense. But the problem is the implementation./

As has been discussed endlessly the actually mechanics need some work, and maybe more importantly there needs to be a better reason to actually engage in PKing/PvP. With the outposts coming i am taking a wait and see attitude..

At the end of the day PvP is an optional part of the game, I spend a lot of time in the lands of umbra (other pr area's are not PvP btw), I've been killed harvesting on a couple of occasions. I don’t follow your implicit/explicit argument as far as i can see anyone entering a PvP area should accept that they are in danger of being attacked. You have a choice to go there or not. If you have no interest in PvP don’t go in a PvP area, that shouldn't ruin the game for you.

I hope this hasn’t come across as a negative post toward anyone, i can respect peoples standpoints but everyone will have a different take on this. Nevrax have to try and keep as many ppl as happy as possible; with a well implemented, optional PvP element they will give high level players an end game worth staying around for, which is probably a good thing for us all :D

in answer to the title: PvP = Fun? - probably (tm)

I still don't see why it's a hot topic. It causes less damage than death by a mob, and happens much much less. Is it just the psychology of being attacked by another player that's worrysome? If so, then being aware of that should empower most anyone to let it roll of their back if it does happen, yes? ;)

I don't mind, so I'd probably say something like "ass, I owe you one :P ," but if you don't want to goad them on or get into it, respawning and running back without really reacting won't feed their interest in killing :) More psychology :P

If someone was camping, killing repeatedly in the same spot when you return or try to leave a spawn (3 times is when I'd call the police), you should definitely get a GM for harassment, whether you like PvP or not.

as an answer to the title:

pvp as in 1:1 can be fun when between chars who have a variety of skills, your stock 2h sword fighter or nuke mage won't find much fun there

pvp as in groups vs. each other is fun when the engagement is done in a varied landscape(like the hill/wood combo southeast of the roadsplit south of avendale)

i know this because i have seen both :]

Random PvP is just PK and has no place in any game i want to play

Duels hmmm ok some ppl like that and its their choice (not my idea of fun but good to have as an option)

Guild V Guild (Especialy with outposts) been waiting for this for sooooo long , the AoA / EoA alliance almost had a War with DCP (a few skirmish's were fought in the roots) ,while this started off with abit of animosity between the two groups it was heading towards a consented (and fun / friendly) War with aranged conflicts before it was quashed by the GMs :( .Theres still some problems with this like telling who is who and targeting issues but ive never felt that rush of excitment at the thought of fighting NPCs

Faction / Race Wars (Time / Location limited events) Id like to see these too , maybe mass Homin V Homin conflict at the Nexus :o , again thered need to be an easy way of identifying friend or foe (different Radar / targeting Colours etc) and no DP would be nice too lol (combat is not my strong point) . A "star rating" on combat lvls (shown on targeting a player) would be handy too so youd have a rough idea of the lvl of your oponent...

To sum up Consent and Control are key to making PvP conflict "Fun" imo

Voted about 3, PvP is required.

I'd like to see no radar though in PvP areas, well radar for only guild/team.

Its too easy to track down a blue dot and nuke at 50m. We could have proper hunts then, and even (god forbid) tactics in PvP fights.

You never know, might even involve a skill! Using scouts etc, sneaky manuoverous (however u spell it), almost, dare i say it, exciting?

PvP = Boring as hell, it's too much about your level; yawn.
GvG = Teamwork, tactics, different roles, rewards (outposts); great!

PvP should be accomodated for those players that enjoy it, but if any game were all-pvp I'd not touch it. I am a slow leveller when it comes to combat skills and that's how I like it, Plus it would be really difficult to skill up at all if the game were all PvP. I have played one game that basically gave the option of flagging yourself ready to pvp. And I did because the storyline gave me a pretty good reason to. (And nobody likes getting set on fire by a fish person with a giant afro so it was all worth it.) I think if I were given the opportunity to choose when I wanted to, where I wanted to I might try it again, but right now I'm enjoying not having a huge need to grind up my combat skills.
Blah blah blah blah... and blah... blah blah blah blah blah! Teh end!

PvP would be fine if players could stay completely friendly. I have never, ever seen that happen. I have seen tight-knit communities in RP-enforced games end up in OOC fights over PvP. PvP encourages a competitive, aggressive atmosphere. That isn't the kind of atmosphere I like - I live in America, I have plenty enough of that already.
