How to make/use Enchantments !

[Copied from the Melinoe Guild website]

One of the most important abilities in the game is also one of the most misunderstood. I have often said that a fighter with an enchanted weapon is the difference between a good and a great fighter, I will attempt to explain how you can add enchants to your skills.

Obviously before you can use an enchanted weapon you must have one. This requires a couple things, first you need a weapon that has a sap load (you CANNOT enchant a store bought weapon).

If you notice in these fine Melinoe crafted weapons, I have a sap load of 773 in my Magic Amplifier and 813 on my Pike. Now I need to load my weapon with SAP.

To do this I need to create "Sap Crystals", this requires magic skills.

Now that you have the skill, you have the stanza's you need to create a sap crystal. I have created one that uses sap and another that uses HP so that I can make them in bulk for my guildmates.

Half of what we need to make an weapon enchanted is done, now that we have sap crystals we need to have a "Crystallized Spell". Right click the spell you want and select "Crystalize".

Now in our inventory we will have sap crystals and crystallized spells.

Right clicking these icons will show you more info on what they are.

Now we need to add these to our weapon to make it enchanted ! Place the weapon you want loaded with sap or enchanted in your right hand and right click the icons in your inventory.

Now we have enchanted weapons !

If you have an enchanted weapon in your right hand, all you need now is to activate it by using the "Use Item Enchantment" stanza which everyone has by default. If you deleted this stanza you can drag it from the "Action Progression" menu.

Notice that my Pike is enchanted with Blind 4, and I used HP and distance credits. Whatever credits are used to cast the spell are inplanted into the weapons enchantment. After you have used the enchantment, the only cost is in SAP equal to the amount required for the spell (In this example 50 Sap per tick will be used for a lock on a blind spell).

If your weapon is not enchanted or it is out of sap load, this icon will be shaded out. Also note that if you are given an enchanted weapon, it may not activate by default (bug). To work around this you only have to load one sap crystal for your client to "see" the weapon is enchanted and unshade the icon.

By using this stanza, you can instant cast the enchantment. If you do not have sap on your weapon as well as the personal sap needed you cannot cast the enchantment. You may or may not get magic XP based on whether you got a spell lock or successful cast.

Casting cost, cooldown time and tricks for enchanted spells

Post by lorgerol »

This is an explanation of how much the enchanted spell will cost you when you cast it, how often can you reuse it and when's the best time to use it.

From the weapon, the spell will drain an amount of sap load equivalent to the spell's "Action Cost", which you can find from the spell's Info.

From the caster, the spell will drain all the things (HP, sap, etc.) that the spell would have if cast directly. Note that this is contrary to what the manual actually says (bug? feature? not clear).

Example 1:
I crystallize the standard Cold Damage 2 spell. This spell has an Action Cost of 15, and in its standard configuration takes 15 sap to cast. When cast using a weapon, it will drain 15 sap load from the weapon and 15 sap from the caster.

Example 2:
I make an edited version of Cold Damage 2, that uses Casting Time as the ONLY credit stanza. The spell still has an Action Cost of 15, but apart from an inordinate amount of time, doesn't cost anything else to cast when cast directly. When cast using a weapon, it will drain 15 sap load from the weapon ONLY, and no sap from the caster. This is a very good spell to enchant weapons with, because you need to spend the time only once to crystallize it, casting using a weapon is instantaneous.

The enchantment has a cooldown time, i.e. there is a short interval until you can reuse it. The cooldown time is equivalent to the casting time of the spell that is enchanted. This means that for the 2nd example above, the enchantment will have a long, roughly 8-10 second cooldown time.

Enchantment activation is instantaneous. When activated using the "Use Item Power" action, the currently executing action is cancelled and the spell in the weapon is immediately cast. At this point, the enchantment will start its cooldown time, however you can carry on doing other actions in the meantime.

The best way to use an offensive enchantment with a long-ish cooldown time is this. Perform whatever other actions you like. When one of your actions just finishes, use the enchantment, which takes a split-second. Immediately afterwards resume doing your other actions while the enchantment cools down.

Example for a mage - turbo casting Cold Dmg:
A lvl 20 or so mage, equipped with a staff that has Cold Dmg 2 enchanted on it, is able to do this. Cast Cold Dmg 2 directly, upon completion immediately cast enchantment, then start casting Cold Dmg 2 again. This allows for 3 quick shots of Cold Dmg 2, especially if the staff's Offensive Elemental Speed bonus is raised. This is enough to take out a Puny Clopper in the space of 4 or 5 seconds :-)

A last note on sap crystals: depending on the level of the Crystallize Sap action, these come in smaller or bigger size. The 1st level Crystallize Sap action allows the creation of sap crystals worth 5 sap, the 2nd level allows sap crystals worth 20 sap and so on. With crystals only worth 5 sap, charging a weapon with a load of 800 can take a very very long time indeed.

I just want to add that there seems to be a bug with enchantments where your crystals fail to appear in the inventory. The only way I know that overcomes this is to craft something then drop it instead of taking it. The next crystal you form should show up safely until the next time you loot.

You are correct, search the forums for sap crystal bug for more details.

You can't enchant jewelry nor armor with castable spells as you can weapons. You can build enchantments into your crafted items using the hp/sap/stamina boosts which the craft trainers teach. These are options which you add to your crafting action just like you do when editing a spell or fight action.
