MAJOR INSTALLATION ISSUE

Post by vickih99 »

I downloaded the program for the free trial on Sunday and have been playing with no difficulty since Tuesday.

My fiance downloaded the file yesterday. He tried to install, but as soon as he clicked on it, it began to "install". However, it didn't stop--it kept running and running without any actual installation, until he finally had to shut his computer down. He thought it was a computer errror, but today, the same thing happened again. Even if he clicks on it to try to delete the installation file, or searches for it to delete it, it continues to run. It has now eaten up 12 gig of space on his hard drive, and the program isn't working or showing any files apart from the initial downloaded file.

Our computers are networked and I tried to delete it from mine and it started doing the same thing. He thinks he's managed to delete the initial program, and it says there are no more files, but he still has 10 gig of space taken up that wasn't used before he tried to install.

He's not even sure he wants to try to download it again, even though he wanted to play. (We've gotten burned out on COH, but are going through game withdrawal!)

Any idea what could have happened and/or how to remove these files?

try downloading total commander here: http://www.ghisler.com

then start that program, select the drive where the excess space is taken up select every directory on it and press space. it should then calculate the size of that directory. doing this and going further into the directory tree should help you find where it is taking up the space. my guess is "Documents and Settings".

also, if you find what is causing the excess use, try to post here what it is, kinda soudns like a virus.

I found what was taking up all the space..it was my virus protection program!!
I used a file size program to hunt down the culprit and to my surprise it was my V-Com total utilities. Inside the system file were many VSS files that were numbered and dated as yesterday and today, most over 1 gig in size. They were classified as unknown files. I deleted over 10 of them and it freed up about 13 gigs on my drive. I have never run into something like that before with my virus program. I have used Ad-aware, Spybot and a few online virus checkers since cleaning those files off and they all report everything is kosher. I cant safely say if it was a problem with the Ryzom installer or something else.

I wouldn't be surprised if the scanner is quarantining the install files, this would cause the loop in the installer as well as it’s not detecting the files it’s attempting to install in the right folder.

Turn off the scanner while installing. Run a scan after the installation if you’re worried about anything.

Close but no sigar ;-)

Most virusscanners are set to scan compressed files where they can, like .zip files. Now I know the downloaded ryzom installer is an exe, but it is also recognized as a compressed file. The scanner wants to scan it when it is activated and it will grab all information that comes out of the file and store it somewhere temporary.... (can you see the troubles looming here?)

Now we *are* aware of the part where it says that the ryzom installer is 1,4 or 1,6 Gb in size? To get a full picture of the files, the scanner will unpack it (it is now 2,1 Gb or more, not sure) and will then scan the contents.

I suspect that letting the installer run for a few hours would have got your client installed eventually.
Either that or a total system melt-down due to disk activity ;-)

Tip: switch virusscanners...
