as far as i know that definition of EAX is wrong, EAX (afaik) is the enviroment sounds, but i dont see how this applys to ryzom very much since ryzom is mainly outside. Its basically the echo when you walk through a sewer pipe, the "sound" of an opera woman singing in a large open hall etc.

Basically its the echo :) which changes depending on where you are etc.

The simplist way to understand this is to get your sound card driver/software up and run an eax test. you should have a list with: off, generic, sewer, padded room, hall, cave, underwater and so on, click test and you will hear a sound (usually footsteps) with the EAX effect added. (muffled in padded room, big echo in sewer and cave, hall is very "light" echo, underwater is muffled watery sound)

OK: basically its an echo - i personally NEVER use it (MAJOR resource hog, and i prefer my bells rung without an echo ;)

Yes it can be a hogger, but when your system is up to it, it also is a great addition. Any in Ryzom, not only the echo, but also the sound of streaming water near a waterfall that is much fuller, footstep in open space, indeed echo's, but also a kipee's cry from far away and lets not forget rain falling.

EAX stands for Envorinmental Audio Effects, it is used to give audio extra properties depending on your location in the scenery. Echo is just the most famous one :-)

If you have a good EAX soundcard, EAX shouldn't hog much resource at all...

It's all hardware-managed, and only requires that certain sounds are given certain environment profiles from software. When EAX came out, implementations were quite buggy - Half Life was a good example, although it came good in the end (HL wouldn't be HL without EAX :) )

Bottom line - if you have a good EAX sound card, and you like the effect, go for it :)
PS Frydes you must be really bored, to resurrect a thread from November :)

It is said that King Arthur, holder of the mighty Excalibur, appointed a medieval engineer in order to build great siege engines. This engineer, through sheer determination, did build a machine to launch said piece of fruit by some distance. A conversation between the King and the Engineer was recorded for posterity:

"And yay My Lord, when yon machine is affixed to the tallest of castles, doth the Banana reach unto the stars, and begin a great journey."
"Canst this machine fire ALL kinds of fruit??"
"Nay My Lord - 'tis finely attuned to the Banana. To adjust yon machine is to adjust the very fabric of space, and tiiiiiiiime..."

on newbie island everything was running fine, with all gfx settings above average. I have just come to mainland and its now impossible to walk around a city.. hdd constantly thrashing, cant even stand still and look around without pc having a fit.

I've turned all gfx to low but has made no real difference, so my question is i am better getting more ram or new gfx card?

Windows XP SP1
512MB DDR 400 1.5GB swap file
80GB 7200RPM hdd with 25GB free
Athlon XP1800+
ATI 9200SE 128MB gfx

cheers

rushin

Your main problem is memory. Upgrade to 1024 and a lot will get better. Trust me, had the same problem. swapfile doesnt stand still a second with 512 mb.
With 1024 my hd led is not blinking once in 5 hours playing !!

Second thing (not problem) is your gfx board. Not to offend you, but 9200 is slow, and the SE is much slower. If you can afford try a card of the 9600 series. Never buy again a SE card !!

I'd guess, by the above reply (back in October) that this isn't really an issue anymore
