dyriddw,
I feel for you. At least youve been able to do something with the game. I have a character up for less than a minute before it crashes. I did actually get the greeter to say something to me once before it rebooted.
I use Radeon 9000 or 8500 myself. Ive tried in both DirectX and OpenGlide and it makes no differenece; I crash within a minute.

If its just the fact that our systems are old, then they need to actually change the minimum spec and actually test these things. But given that I can play EQ, DAOC, SWG and COH with absolutely no problems at all, it has to come down to poor coding or poor testing.

You might try a website like http://www.tomshardware.com to see how the card you are going to purchase measures up against other cards, and how it fares in general.
I use a 9800pro 128mb, in D3D with no graphics problems. I realize the game is a bit too much for my system on settings higher than Normal, I get alot of Chop, and hang ups, nothing terrible, nothing longer than a second or two, no problem, I have a slower CPU.
During the Doom3 tweak sessions, I managed to fry my vid card.
So I was going nuts to find a comprable solution, and I must say it's so nice of these Vid card manufacturers to make the choices so cut and dry;P
When you are standing there wounded and crushed after cooking a $399 vid card you bought 2 two years ago you don't need or want to consider the difference between XT, LT, LE, SE, and X800 XT pro, at $599?WTF!!! I say just name em all FU.
I found myself ignoring the features and just looking at pricepoints. Whatever!
What I found was on the nvidia side the cheapest card with the best performance was a 5900class card, but there was three variants of this card. WHy!?
With ATI the cheapest card with best performance was the 9800pro.
When I was a computer tech, I got used to nothing but the highest end card available, now I don't care that much, so I was going for most i could get at around $250. CompUsa had a rebate deal on the 9800pro, $70 off $249, that was sweet, I almost bought two ;)
Now 9800Pro cards are $200+, and nvidia 6600class cards have just come out at the same price, but they are not as good as the 6800class. So without some research you may go in thinking you're going to get such an such card, say 5700, but without knowing what the hell those stupid letters after it mean you might end up with a neutered version of that card.

sorry for the Tirade, my point being the problem isn't ATI or Nvidia per se, but that there are so many cards available with so many possible configurations, basically we have to do major research before we buy. I think that sucks.

Specifically, articles like:

http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041004/vga_charts-11.html

Provide some a decent, not perfect, comparison between the various available cards, not just one specific class.

Hi, already posted this in the other forums, maybe i ve more luck here.

Can t solve my graphical issues with this game.

In directx mode i ve lot of glitches on screen, streaks and squares in the landscape. Seems to be worse in town and when logging in.

In open GL it's better, but than i only can do window mode and menu's are bugged/getting corrupted.

Tried a lot of things mentioned in other threads, got all new drivers etc. Even did a complete reinstall of XP.

Apart from this and some lag the game is running smoothly up to the highest settings.

Any suggestions or ETA when this gets solved?
thx

avanc, have you tried changing any of the video related BIOS settings on your motherboard? I wouldn't mess around much if you're not familiar with the settings, but at least check to see if fastwrites are disabled (disabled is recommended for newer ATI cards). Sometimes changing the AGP aperture size helps with some games. More BIOS info here: http://www.rojakpot.com/default.aspx?location=3&var1=88&var2=0

I've spent hours poring over Tom's VGA III and IV charts (and Anandtech, and HOCP, and etc.), checking prices to find the best bang for the buck. Good thing its job related for me. :) Unfortunately its hard to determine what game benchmark to compare Ryzom to. Is it like Doom3 because of its OpenGL history? Or like Battlefield Vietnam because its D3D and an online game? In the end I found it's like none of the games commonly used. Upgrading from a nVidia Geforce 4MX to a Radeon 9700 Pro didn't improve Ryzom's performance on my system, though both ran without any problems for me.

I agree the video card industry is getting out of hand with its jacked up and phantom release cycles. I think it would actually be better if they slowed down on new R&D to let driver and game developers catch up. I hope neither of the two giants goes the way of 3dfx (and "OpenGlide" :) ).

Thx for your reply.

My old ati 9800 pro broke down recently and that one had the same problems as my new one. Game itself running ok, only glitches in the landscape (streaks, squares flashing in another colour).

Didnt try fiddling with my bios jet, all other games are running ok. Playing AC2 too and that runs without any problem.

I ll take a look at it, thx

Glad I could help. Strange it was an issue only with Ryzom.
