ATI card with extended desktop

Post by klogger »

Hello,
I am using an ATI card (FireGL 8800) with a dual monitor setup and a horizontal extended desktop. When I try to start Ryzom using Direct3D I get the error:

Can't create a window display (1024x768 32 bits)

just after the splash screen shows up.

If I use a vertical extended desktop then everything starts up OK but the graphics are all stretched to about twice there normal height making the game unplayable within the window I start the game in. The window is the correct size – it is just the graphics that are stretched.

If I set Ryzom to OpenGL then I can only get into the game (black screen otherwise) if I disable vertex shaders and AGP for vertices. However, doing this means the graphics are so bad that again the game becomes unplayable.
If I use either cloned mode or disable the second monitor then the game runs as it should.

I can open up the configuration screens in any mode without a problem.

Has anyone else had this or a similar problem with an ATI card or can offer a solution to fixing it?

Latest drivers and Catacyst
Windows XP
2*AMD 2400MP's
1 gig EEC RAM.
Plenty of hard drive space
Latest DirectX

This looks like a problem within the ATi drivers and within the Ryzom renderengine.
I have an ATi, but do not user dualmonitor setup.

I remember a similar error when tried to run ryzom with cedega on an ATi.

Does the FireGL have sufficient memory to open a window with 3D content on such a large screen ? If you have a 3200x1200x32 desktop, then 128 MByte videomem is not very much.

I am guessing here:
you use full screen mode, right?

Well, windows and full screen modus in Ryzom are no friends. Try windowed and strech the window into the other screen.
Doesnt work? Disable steched screen and use a dual screen setup in windows, that works. I used it for two months, but I found out it costs me 20-25% of fps.

Just fiddle a bit, my friend. When you are gonna buy a new card, get a Nvidia, taht will solve a lot of Ryzom probs too...

I have 2+ pc's (Yer lucky me)

One a Sony off the self has had loads of trouble (the only PC I have even had from Sony that has caused me problems, I have 5 to-date) and it was a 'returned by customer' one so I have always treated it with caution.

I have found the follow:

I have run check data 3 time on different occasions most times it show 56MB-100Mb worth of corrupt files.

After running the download, I usually encounter a reboot during the restart. I have put a good gfx card in it, but the machine tends to forget/corrupt the screen drivers. It has dual screen facilities, so thanks to the poster for that snip it of info I will try it tonight.

My other machine - rock solid self build 100% dedicated to Ryzom (or PlanetSide in previous years). Has so far not had any issues (goes home to find it in bits with smoke pouring out of it).

My guess is that there are so many hardward factors involved in alot of these problems that its is very rarely the game.

I have found on this problem machine that switching to full screen works till I reboot and try to play again.

Just thought I would share as I am very bored at work and the forums are really quite.

Thx for the replies.

Yes it is in full screen mode rather than two totally independant monitors but I am running in windowed mode as I wnted to be able to read the Ryzom database when playing :) . I think you are right about the ATI drivers and ATI just said that the card is really designed for 3D CAD and Animation design (Hrmmmmm - should be good at 3D stuff then right?) and is not designed for games.

Looks like I am going to be in single monitor mode for SoR - at least it woks that way :)
