In game it is safe, out of game, you are right, don't stare at the REAL sun without the proper photographic filters.

Yes there be some nice effects in the sky. Look up at night and sometimes during the day and you'll see shooting stars as well.

Dawn and dusk are very pretty too. Especially as your hacking some Kirostas and Varinx in the background.
