MMORPGs are not like real life. Or, for that matter, like other CRPGs or fantasy novels.
This was brought home to me again last night as I played SoR. As I started with only one magic pack, I had only the "heal others" spell. I quickly realized that this would make leveling up in mage very difficult, especially given my tendency to solo. I was advised that I should group with someone and heal them to level up.
So I cruised for a newbie to help me. I soon found an agreeable newbie, and we raced off to find suckling bybos. We quickly realized that we would be more likely to get wounded, and thus give the other person an opportunity to heal and reap exp, if we took off all our armor and used hands rather than weaps.
Thus began about an hour of two near-naked men running about and molesting suckling bybos, one punching them and grunting loudly while the other did the healing dance. We both made it to magic level 6.
I really don't recall anything like that in any of the fantasy novels I've read. Training has never seemed so, well, bestio-homo-erotic in, for instance, Baldur's Gate.
Now I'm more than a little worried about what I'll have to do to level in forraging.
