Roleplay and Why You "Hate" it
Re: Roleplay and Why You "Hate" it
What if you're already "creepy" or "frightening" in RL and you're a hardcore RPer IG? What happens then?

Re: Roleplay and Why You "Hate" it
I really don't understand why mmo companies don't cater more to the RP centric; it could actually be a quite nice niche market. It's just like with the PVP or no PVP threads... and now, these RP or no RP threads. Ultimately we want choice. WoW almost gets it right but they stop just short... multiple servers for people to pick whether they want a PVP server, RP server, PVP with RP server, no PVP and no RP ... etc, you get the idea.
It's true it costs money to have all these servers running. But this is the type of stuff that makes people leave your game, so why wouldn't they want to retain as many as possible?

Was the player base in this game ever high enough to warrant the use of multiple types of servers in the first place? They had the servers set up exactly that way in Asheron's Call 2... but after everyone quit in AC2 they consolidated the 3-4 no pvp (a.k.a. by the PvP server players "carebear servers") servers into one and the 2 semi-full PvP servers into one to keep pops up somewhat.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA that was fun since there were alot of people with the same names and people would get outright hostile about who would get to keep their names on the server merges.... Good stuff that was, much lolling I did during that period.

But what if I don't want to be segregated off from everyone else? RP isn't exactly hurtful to other players like PVP can be.
RPers aren't lepers. I really don't think its fair to seperate them from everyone else.
Re: Roleplay and Why You "Hate" it
I never have the energy or seriousness to try to RP in games. When I come across someone who does, I usually don't offer much response because I don't want to ruin their fun.
IE, I'm not going to try to roleplay with them, and would rather not say "I don't feel like doing this," so I avoid it.

Re: Roleplay and Why You "Hate" it
Roleplaying to me is not about taking a stide and sticking with it, no matter what happens OOC, nor is it to RP 100% of the time and thereby sometimes become a nuisance.
The reason I roleplay is to be able to give me and the players around me (preferably roleplayers, but OOC players are more than okay too) a nice experience because of how my character acts. Any roleplayer who is all Gung-Ho and refuses to bend his principles even the slightes for the betterments of other players, are just as bad as a PvP-person constantly killing and griefing everything he can see with the excuse "I chose to play this way, and the game allows me to, so shut up!".
Now I love roleplayin and it is one of the main reasons I play MMO's, but everytime I see a hardcore roleplayer that refuses to cater to the needs and opinions of other people than hardcore roleplayers, I just get that creepy feeling of elitism that can destroy whole gaming communities (SWG GCW boards, anybody?).
So, what I am trying to say with this long rant is:
Feel free to always RP but respect non-RP'ers just like you want them to respect you as a roleplayer. If you feel that you would break your immersion by simply doing something slightly OOC for one minute, then perhaps you need to practice doing just that. Because believe me, the best tool ever to roleplay online is to be able to look past the small OOC nuisances and get on with your own story.
Elite roleplayers are just as bad as elite pvpers who can't respect other people. Sad, but true.
Edit: Wow, sorry, that was quite a bump. Didn't look at the dates.

Re: Roleplay and Why You "Hate" it
Well, I'm not reading through the 6 or so pages here, so I'll go with the first thread and tell why I dislike RP.
I just hate the fact that people us Roleplaying as a way to be mean, cruel, hateful, etc. Someone told me that when rping a character, you are pretty much just rping an extension of yourself. So, I hate RP in that sense, because calling me a "Kami Whore" using RP is the same as your person calling my person a whore. Get it?
I do like RP like The Samsara do, or the Dragonblades-I especially like Zahan's RP He's so fun! Anyway, Cruel RP I hate, but when you make it fun, it's okay.
