WoW I'm Glad I Picked Ryzom

Post by splatula »

I am staying at my Dad's for a few days, watching the Bros and Sis. They have WoW and I decided, since they have a Mac I would play WoW, since this super flat panel iMac can't play Ryzom.

Well, I have to say I dig Ryzom way more... it just seems more mature. Maybe I've outgrown the whole squirrely cartoon Warcraft universe, I don't know. It definitely seems like Ryzom is aimed more towards adults though.

Things I don't like about WoW that Ryzom does better:

Graphics... Ryzom is far prettier and more realistic.

Taken from Blizzard's own mouth,
"You can only group and talk to players in your own faction. You also can only view and befriend players in your faction when using the in-game social commands. The intent is to make you feel like a member of one enormous team, while at the same time setting up the other faction as an enemy or, at best, a rival. Thus, if you wish to play with your friends, you will want to all join the same faction. Other content, such as the zones you can visit and the quests you can accomplish, are also organized by faction. Some quests can only be completed by Horde players and others can only be completed by Alliance players. Some zones offer cities and interactive NPCs for one faction, but are completely hostile to the other."

I like that in Ryzom WE get to choose who we ally with or can talk to. Just like you have the choice to be Democratic or push Right in the real world.

I like the MAP better in Ryzom, it is much easier to use...

So I decided to look at the one place everyone should look before buying a game. The Support Forums. Well, similar to Ryzom you seldom see a mod or dev chipping in their $.02 to help fix the problem in the forums. Guess not many companies pay their employees to troll forums all day.

Anyhow I ran into MANY problems that Ryzom resolved a looong time ago. We don't have too many technical glitches anymore, most can be easily fixed by updating drivers and not cheaping out on your hardware by using integrated sound and graphics.

Just a list of the threads on the first page of their support forum...

WoW has a pretty slick LOOKING interface, but when I click on attack a creature, my guy won't run towards it and attack. You are too far away from this creature, or You are not facing this creature. Chances are, if I am clicking like a madman on a creature, I want it dead... as opposed to standing there looking at it with a mean stare until I run right up to it, make sure the angle is good, then click away on my attack hotkeys.

Both games have their share of BUGS, but name one game that doesn't have any bugs?

(sound of crickets in the background)

So you see, I am glad I am here. Sure we don't have spiffy cutscenes that look like an animated film, but we have heart and lots of spiffy creatures and places to go. We have freedom in this crazy world of ours, and I for one love it. Call me fanboy if you like, but there are worse games out there than this one, and Ryzom is only getting better. The children might feel more at home there, but I for one appreciate the variety and maturity I find here.

How much Nevrax pay you to say all that?

I have more heart than anyone would know :) I will let you in on a little secret... I am doing this for my newborn daughter... no one else... I like that game, but I do not have the time anymore. My first priority is to my daughter. End of story.

You mean they actually used their faction system to make a difference in how people play the game???? Unlike this game where the factions are pretty much pointless and mean squat. Reading that really makes me wonder if this game will ever actually make the fame system amount to anything.

In your one statement here you have made the profound statement that everyone needs to understand, players and devs alike.

Ryzom Provides MANY MANY choices, and a lot of freedom. Most times too much freedom is available so that you do not know what to do to help your cause. Tell me where to go in-game to figure out what I can do to help the Matis become almighty? Where do I go and what do I do to get the Karavan to love me and teach me their techno-bable?

I am not saying that my game-play should be directed or scripted, but when I want to help whatever cause I am in support of at the moment please provide me a way to find out how to help them. (in-game)

Freedom and our incredible looking game are incredible, and currently freedom and choice is our bane also. "I don't know how to help so I guess I will go dig." I love the game and want it to be better. This is the place to be, I wish they would deliver what the whole mmorpg community wants in a speedy manner. This game can corner the market and make gobs of money, and as a result, the NeL engine will do awesome too.

Ryzom, without a doubt, has its plusses, not everything is peachy though. Along with harvesting, there is also PVP situation - see my other thread.

I agree with you there marct... people generally like to be lead a little more through events and have more clear objectives. Raynes, their faction system not only demands you play a certain way, but limits that if you want to be a little different. In the WoW universe there could never be a Drzzt, as you cannot go against your own species. There's no RPing the bad guy or the good guy, you are stuck with whatever race you are, and so are your friends. You can't even use the in-game chat system to talk to folks in other factions. It's pretty much as if they closed the tell system in this game and made every area PvP (on PvP servers anyhow) between factions. Really it is STILL just a cosmetic thing to be part of a faction, the only difference is automatic PvP status and inability to communicate or team up with each other.

Your faction in Ryzom WILL come into play when the PvP events start happening, and/or Outposts. It makes sense that certain things aren't available now, as we are rebuilding our society from the rubble. I am interested in seeing what the unique stanzas are that we will be able to get for finishing certain Rites, for instance.

It would be nice if in addition to GMs there were player Guides, that would have to sign an NDA so they'd get more inside info on events and actually be able to direct teams towards goals.

Aww... TY for your support Ambika! :)

And who said anyone is here just because of the graphics? There's more to it than that.

If graphics make the game why are you not playing EQII? ahh...because they...don't? So don't use that as Ryzom's excuse. I'd have played it without the great graphics just because of the open ended system and the competitive player setup. Before Ryzom I played a MUD. I played it since uhh ~'95. I passed UO/EQ etc. All that crap because the MUD I played was better. I dare say it is still the best game out there. No uber chars, pk with limited items, skills/knowledge required etc. After so many years I've played it to death. Though it evolves I don't feel a rush to get back to it.

More important than anything Nevrax has put out lately, I think that you'll find the community the greatest here. In game and out. have fun!
