...PvP...
I own Half-Life 2, and enjoy the original Half-Life Counterstrike, 5 minute zerg missions.
...PvP...
Requires a PURPOSE for it to be fun.
*
To me, PvP is POINTLESS when there is really no PURPOSE other than, oh gee look at me, I got uber sword and i am elite with powerful magic, I can run you down, oh joy.
*
Karavan vs Kami, not ONCE have I seen a Karavan NPC run up and body slam a Kami.
Kami vs Karavan, not ONE have I seen a Kami run up, bite a Karavan in the shin, and run off.
All I have really seen out of either one is the Kami little guy at the teleport spot, stand there, hum to himself, and clap his hands.
As far as the Karavan, well, they just stand there looking like Matrix wannabe's
We, the players, roleplay to try to use the history given to us, to make our own destiny, well, not ONCE have I seen this make any difference in the game.
Current PvP is, well, I have a gun, you have a gun, I shoot you, you shoot me. Replace gun with magic, or choice weapon.
In a word, PvP as it stands, is POINTLESS in Ryzom.

Re: Players thoughts on PVP and player run events. (Questionnaire)
1) Do you like or dislike the general idea of PVP? Why?
I like the idea in a general-sorta way. This way, you don't have to rely solely on the programmers skills, and there is no preset reactions to various stimulai.
2) Have you done any pvp? If not why? If you have what did you like and dislike about it?
I have, but only on a MUD. It tests your brain more to kill someone with a real brain, than it does an NPC. Now with the way Ryzom is set up, it does take more work to best the NPC, but as pointed out, there is no revenge groups hunting people down. If you kill a PC, however... The dislike part is where all your hard earned dap or stuff is taken. Shure the person could sell it, and you could buy it back, but if it is slightly used, he could sell it for money to the vendor, and you wouldn't be able to get it back. Now, if this was a knoweledgable PKing, something agreed upon, then it MIGHT be ok, but if this is the equivalent of some of the stuff I hear about a harvester in the PR and someone does this to get his rocks off...
3) Have you taken part in any player events (pvp and nonpvp)? If yes what ones and what did you like about it? If no, why not?
Yes, the gladiator event. That is actualy the only event I have been able to make it to. That was a blast. Got to see the high lvl skills being used, that was my first sight of a living weapon actualy in someone's hands, and listening to the banter as people hacked each other to pieces was kinda nice. Showed that Zora wasn't completely barren.
4) What sort of player events would capture your interest (pvp and nonpvp)?
The gladiator evet, for one. Something like what was planed for the assasin of Pyr would be nice, too. Just remember to hide him/her/it better. Scavenger hunts could be cool, too. Then you could kill someone and get his scavenger item to collect 'em all, or everyone could work together to keep one person or group of people from winning. Capture the flag/lazer tag type thing between teems would be cool. Already planning this for the Guild tasks, but what about smaller versions of it?
5) If an event were held that combined roleplay and pvp, would you take part? If not, why not? What would get you to change your mind?
It would depend. Right now, my character is going by what he has been taught on newbie island, meaning he might be easly swayed, either way. So it would be more a watch to see what is going on, and decide based on what he sees.
6) If an event where held where you were asked to attack something in game (npc or mob) in order to invoke a pvp responce, would you do it? If not, why not?
I would try to take others state of being into account first, but in a RP environment, it would boil down to what would my character do. If it was an unannounced thing, like alot of the triggered events are right now, wouldnt' realy have a choice, now would I?
7) On the flip side if something were being attacked and you were called to defend it in a pvp situation, would you answer the call? If not why, why not?
Depends on what it is. If my character was called on to defend a fellow Zorai, or one of the groups that I had worked to raise my faction with, then yes, same as them asking me to go find some aromatic plant, or kill off some animals that were causeing problems.
8) If you answered #6 and # 7 differently, what is the reason you would take part in one over the other?
Didn't realy answer them differently.
9) Would you take part in roleplay events and pvp roleplay events if your roleplay position was only valid at the events? In otherwords if you could join events as a Karavan or Kami supporter, then when it's over be considered just a player with no support for one side or the other, would you be more interested in pvp and roleplay events?
I would actualy be less interested. If I RP something out with my character, it becomes part of my character. It's part of what makes this game so appealing, the whole 'stuff you do actualy matters' thing. If you join in a battle, you joined in a battle. You were there. A single drop of water is just a drop, but you take a whole lot of those drops, and you create a living being, or a storm that reshapes the landscape around it (pritty much the same thing, when you think about it). Now, if after the battle, you were to work so as to appear that you have no backing, and no aligance, then fine, that is your perogative, but a simple 'No, I know no such man' or 'No, you must have me confused for another' simply isn't going to cut it, nor should it realy be allowed to. Now, if it was glitched, like that area over in Matis lands was for a while, Hanging gardens, I do believe, then that should be correctable, or if it is a person's first time in an event of that type, they should be allowed one 'do over', but to make your choice be completely meaningless... Doesnt' realy sit right with me.

Re: Players thoughts on PVP and player run events. (Questionnaire)
Make there be a fiew more NPCs at the event, and make them aggro only on other NPC of opposit faction. Doesn't sound too hard, just make them aggro on the beings with the highest negative faction, and make shure that those, at least initialy, are the enimy NPCs.zumwalt wrote: Karavan vs Kami, not ONCE have I seen a Karavan NPC run up and body slam a Kami.

I too would like to see a Kami and a Karavan go at it. Be interesting to see the ships do more than make pritty lights, not to mention see how some of those Kami actualy manage to move around. Most of the time, they do nothing but stand or sit there, grunting or claping, or what ever.
Re: Players thoughts on PVP and player run events. (Questionnaire)
1) Do you like or dislike the general idea of PVP? Why?
I dislike it, I am peaceful as much as I can be. The thought of accidentally involving someone that doesn't want to PVP in my PVP is upsetting, since I have been on the receiving end of unwanted griefing.
2) Have you done any pvp? If not why? If you have what did you like and dislike about it?
I have played numerous PVP games, and various systems of PVP from opt in with an on switch and timer on changing it, to open Mosh pit, to duel/arena/seperate servers only. I have yet to find a system other than the opt IN system that has suited me. Too often it ends up high level players that have the real life time to spend grinding up to high levels picking on lower levels. As to their motivation, I just don't understand it.
3) Have you taken part in any player events (pvp and nonpvp)? If yes what ones and what did you like about it? If no, why not?
Yes, I have gone on two "world tours" hosted by a guild other than the one that I am in. I found the cooperation against difficult travel inspiring and invigorating.
4) What sort of player events would capture your interest (pvp and nonpvp)?
I enjoyed the game event of player against the invasion, it wasn't perfect, but EVERY player could contribute once they got to the point of crafting Q50 or over or could heal reasonably well. I would like to see an event, role played or not(I like role play, but don't think anyone should HAVE to role play to participate, my opinion here) where players attack Ane and kill her AND her guards.
I would also like to see a server wide "swap meet" where everyone brings out their slightly used gear and swaps it or sells it. Since you can't sell it to other players in merchants, but even used gear has some life left in it.
5) If an event were held that combined roleplay and pvp, would you take part? If not, why not? What would get you to change your mind?
Not, It is just TOO easy for feelings to get hurt and for people to misunderstand if the event isn't in a confined space and "innocents" could possibly get mixed up in the mess. If there were someway of putting a disclaimer or warning out to the general public that this "scene" was just that, a role played scene...maybe, not sure.
6) If an event were held where you were asked to attack something in game (npc or mob) in order to invoke a pvp responce, would you do it? If not, why not? Not, I am not a provoker. The premise of this is upsetting someone enough that they are willing to put their ethics and morals aside long enough to get rid of an annoyance. I can't even play a role like that.
7) On the flip side if something were being attacked and you were called to defend it in a pvp situation, would you answer the call? If not why, why not?
I would defend, just as I did in the invasion, I am not a high enough level fighter...I don't like melee or magic, I am a crafter/digger. But I could stand back and heal. I just do NOT like PVP when feelings and emotions could get misunderstood and hurt.
8) If you answered #6 and # 7 differently, what is the reason you would take part in one over the other? I am non violent, but I believe in self defence. it is as complicated and as simple as that.
9) Would you take part in roleplay events and pvp roleplay events if your roleplay position was only valid at the events? In otherwords if you could join events as a Karavan or Kami supporter, then when it's over be considered just a player with no support for one side or the other, would you be more interested in pvp and roleplay events?
If there was a way to make a disclaimer, on the forums, in game, more than once, and if there was a way to AVOID getting those that do NOT consent to the PVP in the brawl...maybe.
I just can't blindly take a side in any us against them fight. I don't firmly believe the Kami are "on my side" and I doubt that the Karavan is for freedom and democracy (they allowed, maybe even contributed to the slavery of the Tryker. I stand against that.). I don't believe that either side is giving up all of their knoweldge, and I believe that if we had that knoweldge, we could fight the goo and kitins better than we currently can. Friends help friends, with all of their ability, especially when that ability costs them nothing. NEITHER side is doing that...ergo...they are not our friends.
I like the idea that you are looking for a why rather than anything unproductive, when people ask questions, sometimes they find the answers they are looking for, and sometimes they find answers to questions that they didn't even know they were asking.
And I like this color idea to differentiate quote from answer.
Please answer truthfully and with your own thoughts. As the purpose of this is to get an idea what people think, there is no right or wrong answer. Also please keep the arguements and debate out of this thread.
Thanks for your cooperation.

Re: Players thoughts on PVP and player run events. (Questionnaire)
I love pvp, played Ultima online, EQ race war server, Dark Age of Camelot, and Lineage 2
Im new to this game yet, (christmas) but Im ready to pvp anytime.
Not silly duels, but full scale guild battles
Im Fyros, but dont really care about faction as in Kami/Karavan
My only concern is my guild and my friends, and Il fight to the death for both
Hope that answers all questions
Gipsie ...... Fyros Melee Warrior, The Sacred Order.
