Come in, pull up a chair, let's discuss all things Ryzom-related.

i'd also like to see where you got your stats for hte linux clients cause it's not on their webpage
No I read just fine. You see the difference is that I'm not going to stay silent when you say what amounts to "it's impossible for someone to have posted windows:linux client for a mmo becuase there are none... except for a couple almost sorta kinda mmo's that don't count"
Unfortunately for eGenesis, the total number of players on Linux is dramatically smaller than the number on Windows, representing less than 1% of total players -- 101 subscribers out of 7,063.

well considering both a tale in the desert and planeshift have no killing it's mostly a walk around and do crafting and crap like that, i'm not frankly suprised why there's no linux ppl playing it or hardly anoyone at all

this is why i said they don't really count. it's really a companies problem of them not going after the correct demographic

ryzom on the other hand would be a good for our demographic because it's something that most ppl who use linux would enjoy in a game

The core is already done and can be used in linux, they only would only need to build the frontend to execute the game from...

i would appreciate a linux client, too.

I'm not happy with only using windows for running ryzom (and! having problems with proxies. I have to use a http-proxy für port 80 and so no ingame mailbox oder forum or even ticket works).

Hope to see a linux client for the Saga of Ryzom.

Re: Linux, SoR, and Gameplay content.

---
I went to 100% Linux as of two days ago. Windows has a tendancy of grating on my nerves, although WinXP is one of the better versions in a while (since 3.11 IMO).

However, I don't have the urge to fork out yet more $$ for a copy of Cadega.

I have two months left on my SoR account, I can't see that I will ever play the game again.

The Saga of Ryzom has impressive future proofing, but has succumbed to the age old problem of "man, that's so cooool" by the devs, forgetting about true gameplay content (does anyone remember spending hours upon hours playing 2D graphics games for the pure pleasure? Content content content).

The thing about this game that made me keep playing it was the community. Everyone in the game, except for the rare individual, has a great attitude.

I am about to embark on a search for another MMORPG to play. My one specification is full Linux support.

Nevrax is OSS. I'm not sure why an experimental ported client wouldn't be possible. If they use OSS to code, then porting should be relatively simple. I am guessing it is a funding issue.

However, if you cater to your community, funding will come in the form of new subscriptions. A one off post to slashdot.org and other such online Linux focussed communities would immediately increase Ryzom subscriptions.

I believe that the online gaming experience has the potential to be a highly successful use of OSS. A pay-for-use service, with a free client, is an ideal financial model. With a slew of highly intelligent people begging to help someone do something significant, the first MMORPG (or MMOG of any genre) to embrace the Linux community with a hint of "the good stuff" (something Ryzom has) will become a benchmark for every other MMORPG.

Anyhow guys, it's been great knowing you all. I'm going to stick to using Oscarian as my general nick. Look for me if you ever try another MMORPG with Linux support.

Cheers-

[Edit]
I bought Cadega a couple of days ago, after landing a new job. I'm downloading it now! See you all in there soon.

I do find it surprising that there isn't a Linux version of the game, as the source engine (NEL) seems to be both for Linux and Windows. They even have a "help" forum for Linux for NEL on the homepage:

http://www.nevrax.org/tiki-index.php

It's most likely due to cost however. I doubt they can support both versions with the budget they have - (and this is pure speculation), but i can't see Nevrax having an awful lot of resource (money) available to do everything it wants.

It's much easier (read cheaper) to only have one supported OS version of a game, than two. Yes it may bring in more money to have two, but will that money offset the amount they would spend developing both versions (there would be - at least - some code changes)? And would they (read, accountants, of the powers that be for Ryzom) risk money on such a venture?

Doubtful.

I'd love Ryzom to be on Linux, but i can't see reality allowing that to happen.

PS: anyone know what the Subscription numbers are for Ryzom? Actually quite curious about that.

thexdane wrote:funny i'd REALLY love to see that. i know that a windows CAN'T perform better than a linux server. i've seen it in action, if windows could perform better than linux as a server why is there more apache webservers than iis?

i have boxes that have uptime in actual years, i've yet to see a windows last more than a few months as just a desktop system let alone a server
I'm not going to get into this debate as I don't know much about Linux, other than using it as a cheap admin OS for a firewall system that a company I used to work for made, but I wanted to relate a story to you - the story of the missing server...

Some time ago, I went to visit a company called... well, it doesn't matter what they were called but suffice to say they're a world leader in logistics. Anyway, they spend a huge amount of money on their technology center as it's the showcase for stuff their global divisions may be interested in using.

One time I went to visit them and somehow the subject of Linux and Windows server reliability came up, and the manager of this place told me this story. It appears that during a network topography check they were doing, they realised they were missing a server. The server was there on the network but no-one could actually find the box. Eventually they traced the cables to the machine, only to discover that somehow it had been bricked up into a wall space during some construction work that had happened some five years previously.

So, this server had spent five years bricked up behind a wall, covered in cement and brick dust and mould and had never failed once. It had been used as a file server and mail server, with some other minor bits and pieces running on it too.

The OS on this 'lost' server that had survived five years of entombment without failing once?

Windows NT4.
