Anyone playing Ryzom on a laptop ?

Post by xorte »

Is anyone playing Ryzom on a laptop.

I'm thinking of buying thr Dell Inspiron 9200 and wondered if the on board Radeon 9200 128MB graphics card would be sufficient to play Ryzom on.

It has 2GHz p4 CPU and 2GB ram.

I'm using an Inspiron 8500, which is a step-down from that and it runs Ryzom fine. My g/f is using an 8600, with the same graphics card as the one you posted and similar spec, and it runs Ryzom like a dream.

I'm running it on an IBM T40, with a Radeon 9000 Mobility (64MB) and a P4M (1.6 GHz I think) with 1GB of RAM.

Speedwise, runs fine.

Graphics, different story until recently. The problems with sub-9500 Radeons and this game are well documented. A patch a while back seemed to fix most of the truly nasty ones (couldn't go to Tryker or Fyros or complete crash), but you might check the Tech Support boards for other info.

Also, my card tends to run really hot and if not ventilated (laptop cooler from Targus works unless its hot inside, in which case I have resorted to ice packs under it) will shut down very quickly. Not an uncommon problem either. Might want to check user boards on the Inspiron - my g/f has similar problems with hers, but not positive which recent model it is.

I'm running on an Alienware that was pretty much top-of-the-line 15 months ago (3.2GHz P4, 1GB RAM, Radeon 9600M). Works pretty well at 1600x1200. Had problems about a week ago with wretched framerates (2-3 fps) and lowered most settings to bare minimums (5000 polys/person and so on) which helped. Since then I've bumped graphics settings back to around defaults and had good fps during Matis-Tryker run with about 40 others, even during combat.

So, yes, I'd say there are laptops that can do the game justice. If you're thinking about picking one up, you can usually get good information at http://www.tomshardware.com . They cover gaming laptops from time to time.

DONT BUY NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The new generation of mobile graphic solutions is in the start holes - so wait two months.
And if you need a laptop now: There are very cheap ones with a radeon 9700, or a geforce 5600. Even radeon 9800Pro, x600 - x800 and geforce 6600GT are available.
So better wait or try to buy one of these...
