I tried some more this morning, pumping the credits until my success percentage was in the 95-100% range. I really did not notice any appreciable difference in the number of hits links or durations of these spells.

I haven't been able to figure out how this works either, but when I craft stuff and wanna make some money, I get the mission things from the overseer folks. I don't know if you get as much from them as you would from one of the suppliers though. And what about Hawkers? Don't they buy things too ...

The problem is that you hit the Quality Level Mode Change much faster on a ql50 than ql100. More mode changes increase the chances of disadvantaged mode numbers, which result in the need for more care plans or faster depletion/retreat. Hope that helps. Not in this case.
