I play the game from Australia. I noticed that the ping is between 500 and 600 which is very bad. Can anything be done about this?

You DONT have to install ANYTHING! Just unrar or unace the file to the place on your HD where you wanne have it, and then just hit the client_ryzom file in that map, or make a shortcut to it on your desktop.
