as a noob to this game I would jsut like a quick question answered.
I'm currently lvl 48 in melee weapon crafting and rising quickly, I have noted that if you use all choice mats you generally get choice gear. What the problem is though is I cannot select anything better than choice mats to craft with.
Is there something on the skill tree I need to move above choice?
am I just too low lvl?
or am I missing the point entirely?
I just want to make myself some good looking q50 amps
if any experienced crafter can answer my question I would be grateful (and no I dont wanna buy your good lookin q50 amps )
crfting better than choice gear
Re: crfting better than choice gear
To make better then choice crafted items, you need excellent or supreme materials.
To get these, you can:
Buy them (if you're lucky) from the NPC Raw Materials merchant
Loot them from very high end mobs.
Forage them
to get better looking amps, you need to invest your craft sp in the medium or high quality plans. You can do this once you get to lvl 50 melee weapon craft (for the medium plans, costs 40 sp).

Re: crfting better than choice gear
There's an important distinction you may be missing here. The type of mats you use (choice, supreme etc.) doesn't affect the LOOK of the item. To make better LOOKING items, you need (as drcole said) the medium (at lvl 50) and high (not sure of lvl cos i haven't got there yet!) quality plans.
Re: crfting better than choice gear
thanks for the advice people
philu. yes you right as mentioned in previous post. Where I was getting confused also was the inability to use supreme/excellent mats to make anything (when you have these mats you dont have the option to use them to craft)
I know now I have a few more lvls and I can be on my way to making supreme goods

Re: crfting better than choice gear
You have to use the same sort of excellent/supreme mats, than You use the choice ones... e.g. choice Tryker (as Tryker crafter) may only use excellent/supreme Tryker mats.
There is only the exception, that You may use Root mats with every land's crafting. Even if You learn to produce Fyros items as well, You are still bound to Fyros mats when crafting a Fyros item - and though You are also able to craft Tryker choice+ mats, You are not allowed to use them when crafting Fyros items.
ehm - did I make it clear this way?

Re: crfting better than choice gear
From the long, long delayed XUUWAG - my now 40 page walkthrough -
"In general, you should look for choice or better items. However, this is NOT a hard and fast rule, because theres another factor. Many fine and basic items give an item better bonuses in categories that actually matter. An example: as a ranged crafter, using fine ragus ligaments and hide will actually increase the range of a weapon more than using supreme materials! Another common misconception is that the best amps are supreme. Yes, amps made using supreme amber often give the best casting results overall but if you use choice or excellent bark, you will often actually decrease the spell bonus statistics, and mixing certain types of high quality amber and choice or excellent materials provided by mobs can often produce higher spell bonuses in desired categories like elemental speed and power than just using stuff labeled supreme.
This is where an items title can be deceiving. The system takes the total items used to make a mat, averages the material quality ranging from 5 for supreme mats to 1 for basic mats, and displays a title that is closest to what the item contains. So an amp made of 10 supreme ambers, 8 basic bark, and 2 basic fibers = 50+8+2 = 60/20 mats = 3 = shows up as choice amp, which will often have better stats than a supreme amp. (This assumes you make the item correctly - degraded items will often drop a mat quality level or two.)
This is where the experience and knowledge of the crafter comes into play. There are in fact a couple of material quality databases out there that you can google, but when you combine materials odd things often happen. Unfortunately, as a buyer youre pretty limited in finding out what are the qualities of the item only crafters actually get the screen with all the various mods actually end up being. Otherwise, youre stuck with the few statistics that the system displays on finished items, like hit points, damage, hits per minute, and protection. The only way to know for sure is to ask the crafter directly."
So basically, yes, if you use 51% excellent mats and 49% choice mats you'll end up with an 'excellent' item of some sort. Now go PL harvesting so you can get em.

Basic item - lvl 1+ 30 SP
Medium quality item - lvl50+ 40 SP
High quality items - lvl 150+ 50 SP
you have to buy the crafting plan for each after you reached the required lvl.
Once you have the crafting plan you can craft any Q item with any type of material in those qualities (looks).
The look is also dependant on race, because the items of each race look different. Its possible to craft other racve items when you get the neccessary stancas.
But its a heavy investment in SP:
Lets say that you want to craft the high Q versions magic amp of all 4 nations in Q160:
4 * (50 (= start weapon craft) + 15*25 (= Q20 - Q160) + 30 ( =basic amp) + 40 (=med Q amp) + 50 (= high Q amp) ) = 2180 SP
