Is there anyway at all to turn this off?

My fps drops below zero (I know, I exaggerated) when ever I am around this stuff.

If there is an option to turn off the useless ramblers in towns that would help too. I lag to death in towns and no matter which direction you run in - some utterly annoying npc is guaranteed to step in your way. I'm sure they do it on purpose.

I'm with you on the town NPCs, but I doubt it will be possible for clients to 'turn them off', only have them removed completely. I think those of us without super-powered PCs are in the minority, so I doubt its going to happen.

As for the smoke though, this doesn't effect me as far as I can tell. I do think that it looks -really- nice though!

I think with another 512 mb and a better graphics card (ati 9200 atm) I'll be able to handle it...next month maybe.

or you could just buy a card that this game was actually made for and not risk the danger of complete incompatibility ;)
@smoke: try finding the ini setting that controls the polygon count for special effects and force it to zero

Regarding the enormous lag in npc areas, I noticed that exactly after the recent patch (dec. 21.).

I usually run the game in OpenGL mode, as I crash VERY often in Tryker lands while running the game in D3D.
But after the patch, I suddenly became overwhelmed by intense lag as soon as I entered a village or town. The lag was not occuring while running outside the citylimit, but came as soon as I entered, and it continued after I left the city/village.

The lag only occoured while moving (my ping went up to 4-5000 and I had packet loss), but standing still made the game run as usual.

Now, who would/could play under these circumstances??? Not me!
Luckily exiting the game and starting it in D3D mode, solved my powerlagging.

I havent tried playing in the Tryker areas yet (after patch) and I fear the worse.

I'm in serious need of another 512mb of ram too, but playing on a laptop, sheesh, the price of the ram upgrade would buy half a desktop gaming rig!

And yeah, if your primary game is Ryzom, go for an Nvidia card. They perform a lot better in Ryzom on mid-range PCs
