Can I survive at level 20?

Post by lily123 »

Really chomping at the bit to see the mainland and see how different it is than newbie island. Have gleaned that I can NOT return however. Level 20 in fight. Can I, should I, pop over? Have only soloed to date. Is it a lot different? Is it suicide? And, are there any real differences in hunting? Or just quantity and more dangerous?

Mobs in the starting mainland zones are up to like level 50. This means most mobs will be over your level, just like when you were 8 or so on noob island. There are however packs of rapidly respawning lowbie mobs increasing in strength from suckling yubos on up, covering the noob island strength mob. You can even go to mainland at level 1 and not have problems. It's safer and easier to get cash though on noob island. Just go one time when you're bored, you'll be fine 8)

Thanks Ael. I'm not a patient person! That said, and drawing my conclusions from EQ, it seems idiotic to go where I simply cant survive. But with your advice I just might give it a go! Heck, at level 20 i can always create a second toon. Probably goofed up anyway on Marbond. At least this time I'll have a clue on how to choose the packs! Heh heh

you should be able to survive anywhere with any level if you manage to be sneaky :P
leveling on the mainland is not too difficult for a lowbie, but more boring, example fyros: a lvl 1-20 fight char can use the entire noob lands for leveling, and they're about 1.5 km x 1 km if i remember correctly, but in the main land the mobs for that range are way less and you can only level right outside the east gates in a 200mx200m region :/

Benefits to staying in newland:
ability to learn without worries of social mobs
Ability to learn foraging without worries of agro two hit to kill ya mobs
ability to forage EVERYTHING in the region and have a FULL accurate map of ALL materials within four to five played days
ability to craft items and sell them to NPC's who will then sell them to other players, you can make MUCH more money since you can pick and chose your mats

Benefits of mainland:
you can join a guild
you can pay 100k for a packer and get more storage
you can pay a MILL for an apt (that almost everything thinks is a bad joke)
you can forage...amber....at the gate...IF that roving baying gingo doesn't smell you
you can forage some mats but not nearly as wide a variety as in newbie lands
(if it is the "best material" COUNT on a Three star or higher guarding the choice or higher grades)

Q50 and higher materials in ALL varieties...if you are able to keep the mobs taunted away from the nodes.
Access to other races armor and weapons (some will look better than your stuff and some will not please you, buyer beware)
More variety in atmosphere (you can see more landscape and different mobs than on newbie, which admittedly the small selection gets OLD fast)
GROUPS...if you shout for one you MIGHT get one, and trust me...this IS a biggie! If you CAN group...do it!

eventually even the DIE HARD newb island huggers...like me *bows* leave newbvile for mainland (I left at 30 melee, 20 magic, 57 forager, 30's weapon and armor crafting). But it is like leaving high school, you will miss parts of it for life, and other parts you won't miss a bit.

My daughter just HAD to have a cute tryker so I made her one and decided to make it so she can have fun and not die all the time. I immediately brought the character to Fairhaven and within 200m of the spawn/teleporter raised the character to level 23 melee and level 27 magic within 3 hours soloing.

As the XP changed for the messabs I moved around the corner for the goari, and later the clopper. Experience helps since I wasted as little time or resources as possible and didn't touch the mobs that were more XP but slower to kill.

Once your more comfortabe with the mobs and the names that show their strength you'll have no problems at all going to the mainland.

lets see, I transfered some excellent high damage 2h swords Q10-Q50 to a character in matis and made her go straight to main land from creation. got to 30ish in about an hour and a half, with some magic thrown in. Plenty of mats (I brought no armor or money) so I could start equipping with Q40 heavy armor. Even if I went naked I don't think it would take me the several days to get to 20 in magic and fight that it did the first time. Chalk that up to experience and my running tasks for more money!

I've played since the second to last week of beta though. My character is also over 100 in elemental and harvesting. So leveling a newbie (this was before missions and rites) would just be boring. During my time in beta and at the beginning of retail, I stayed plenty of time on the noob lands. It's plenty of fun and really lets you learn your interface. Yeah you can make a ton of money crafting there too.

I came over right after landing lvl 20. Looking back though, I would have stayed on noob island longer. The xp was better.

Depends on where you are and what you want to do.

It seems the Trykers are most vocal about how easy it is out of newbie island. Maybe for them. But for others...well, Tryker hunting and mobility is notoriously easier than on Matis, where if you walk 100m out of the gate you can easily encounter a gingo that will tear you up even when you're level 50 and they're level 30. (Welcome to the reality of hunting post-patch 1.) On Tryker, you can always pop into the water if something gets aggro on you - and the cloppers aren't nearly as nasty as the gingos of their level. Zorai seems to be somewhat in between, and I haven't hunted Fyros in a while.

What's also important to know is that hunting changes dramatically once you hit the mainland as group dynamics change too. Attacking that nice weeny kipee surrounded by 3 others blissfully unaware of their brother's fate works only on newbie island; try that on a vulgar kipee on the mainland and every kipee next to him will go aggro on you. This makes soloing a wee bit harder.

My blanket advice is this:

If you're primarily a harvester, come over ASAP - level 50 mats help advancement a ton, even if the visible ones don't give instafocus regen so you need to make sure you have a couple prospecting skills before arriving and just scope out stuff near the visible stuff.

If you're a crafter, stay on newbie island forever, or at least until level 40 when you can get q50 plans. Solo crafting advancement got nerfed beyond even fanboi-types ability to defend it post-patch 1, and you will need a big bank account to do any sort of work, which is far easier to accomplish on newbie island. Newbie players to the mainland do buy q50 items (often for not much, but at least you'll have a market unlike if you can only make q30 items), but you will find you will make more selling q20 choice items on newbie island.

If you're a fighter, you should at least get up to where you can use q50 armor and weapons - and unlike newbie island, you WILL need armor as a fighter, so save up at least 100k before coming over to buy stuff - which translates to at least level 30 when you can boost your stats to 40 per stat. (I remember selling a max dmg q50 sword to some kid who had thought his choice q20 sword would last him forever. He sang my praises on region for a week since he wasn't dying routinely.) I would stay to level 40 for the extra hp and stamina. If you for some reason are stupid or crazy enough to level ranged, stay even longer...you'll need those extra skill points for self-heal and melee protect aura.

If you're a mage, depends on your focus. If you primarily want to heal, get over to the mainland and find yourself a group once you hit level 20. If you want to nuke or play a balanced mage, stay for a while as the acid-cold/fear combo doesn't work as well when you have a group of mobs or certain mobs that aren't affected by fear. I stayed till 40 in all of my skills and while it got boring, I don't regret it one bit.

Good luck.

This is an excellent post with good, detailed, clear advice in it. Would you mind reposting it in the beginner's guide?
