hmm there isnt much difference there all vry unpopulated areas on the starting islands the area you go to first is a newbie land in essence for training some skill b4 you come to the mainland i fail to see how it works tho since everyone leaves there asap to get the real weapons/armours from mainland heh

get your melee skill up to around 20 atleast b4 heading to the karavan people to teleport you to the mainland where you can find a guild team with other players and lvl a bit easier :)

The only real differences (on the Fyros lands at least; I'm not matis so I wouldn't know about them) is the type of mob around each town, and which mats are there... Once you get to be high enough lvl to travel between the towns it makes no difference anyways...

to become a crafter you will definatly also need harvesting skill but harvest/craft can be leveld quite easily on the mainlands the only problem you will find is that in this game 90% of the skills are required to do the other ones heh

for crafting you either need someone to supply you with materials or you need to take harvesting to get them as mobs hardly have anything better than fine materials unless you kill boss mobs which have excellent/coice/supreme but that requires melee/magic skill depending on which you want to do the mats from harvesting usually alot better anyway

for harvesting you will need melee as some spots you will need to go to for the best materials will be guarded by agro mobs or if they arent expect the devs to soon add some ROFL

for magic you will need to get melee too as at higher lvl when you reach double cast skills you will need alot of hp/sap to take the usage from the spells
for melee i guess this is the only real stand alone skill since you dont need to have anything to support the stam/hp use other than melee skill itself

hopefully this will help you chose which start pack on skills to get i myself found that if you start with 1 harvest 1 craft and 1 magic you get the default attack for free which in essence opens up all 4 trees for your use :)

when you log off you char is saved and you will relog where you exited the game :)

I would recommend lvl'ing your harvest and craft by doing the craft missions and using the mats gained from forage. Get the prospect plan asap to make your own prospect spots :) . The craft missions will make it affordable to do the crafting. Also level your fight (u'll need the hp later on for sure) :)

At what point do I select my start packs?

I think you may have passed that point already - you do it on the character creation screen, after you've selected your race and characteristics - the starter pack section is towards the bottom of the screen, and if I remember correctly it already has some default packs selected...

Mind you, if you need to go back it's not too bad at this point - you can delete the char and create a new one, without losing too much experience and time etc.
