At the beginning... PART 1
There are 2 ways to become a Magician:
- Choose a Mage action pack at the character creation:
What starter pack should I choose?
Mage/Mage/Craft
Mage/Mage/Harvest
- Choose a Mage action pack from a Fighter,Crafter or Harvester trainer.
Let's nuke those Yubo's!
The first spell you can learn is Acid 1,
With this spell you can blow away some Yubo's to start gaining levels.
You can cast spells with your bare hands or do it another way!
'Ze Magic Amplifier'
This is your weapon!
But you're not going to slap creatures with it, you're going to cast
BETTER spells with it! Magic Amplifier (=amps) contain bonuses:
You can see (in the screenshot above) for example 91% in Offensive Elemental Damage, this means you do 91% more damage with your amps equipped. You can also see % in Casting speed, this means you cast your spells faster when the amp is equipped.
So how do I kill that yubo?
Very easy, select the yubo and press the number of Acid 1 in your quickbar, Look how your character is going to play with some green goo and lobs it to the Yubo. Yubo's dont get killed in 1 time so you might cast another Acid to get it killed.
That's really nice! But when I cast a few spells it is said that I don't have enough Sap..
To cast spell's sap is used. After you get some skill points you can increase your sap pool by getting Intellegence!
Next up.. Spell tuning

That has been changed, as far as I know. You get acid 1 instead of heal 1 when choosing one mage action pack.
Additionally I have heared that killing a yubo with acid 1 isn't as easy as before. Due to the new damage they do etc. you will get killed insted in 1/2 cases. (But I haven't tried it with a new char yet, so I can't verify that)

A noob here. Yes it has been changed. However, if you are wanting to be a "pure" mage and only start off with 1 mage pack (or even 2), you will have a rather difficult time with even the smallest of creatures.
I suggest starting off with all 3 packs for Magic, that way you get the Fear & Root spells. They are life savers - especially when just starting off. They will make your starting of the game much easier.

It seems that alot of game mechanics have changed. I'm a new player trying to learn more about magic.
I hope some more experienced players can make some "current" guides. I see alot of posts relating to specific high level content of which i have no clue. It's nice to see something like this that gives clear reccomendation on what to start out with.
Yes of course skills just like in any other mmorpg is subjective and it's all based on what you want to do in the game but for a new player like me it's hard to plan / plot a course without a frame of reference.
I'm still sifting through the forums but i'm trying to find a guide that lets newcomers know what course of action will lead to various outcomes. It's clear ..it seems that if you want to be a mage you should take all mage action packs at char selection. If you do this however can you still gain melee skills since the skill advancement system is very flexable? if so , how? what are the pros and cons of magic packs? Melee packs? how do they affect your character in the long run? If you could go back and do it over what things would you have donme different for character development?

You should take at least on Mage pack. I would advise that you do not include fighting.
Later in the game it is very is unusual to find a pure mage and most people have a mix of abilties.
I started as a mage, crafter, forager. You get a magic amplifier, which is essential for a mage, and general purpose crafting materials. At first I could not to kill anything in one hit using the starting spell (Acid 1) and used the magic amplifier as a melee weapon to finish the critters off. Using melee will split the magic and melee XP, so you will start to level in both. Soon you will get Acid 2 which will kill the lower ceatures in one hit.
The next stage I found that the experience points for for magic were low and it was become a grind. I bought a high quality weapon (Q20) and cast one acid spell then killed the critter off with the weapon. If the weapon is good you will get half the experience on magic and half on melee.
Using forage and craft I made medium quality armour. I didn't go for heavy as you will need to spend a lot of points improving your stamina - stamina powers melee and armour saps stamina.
I am sure that other people have their own methods.

Patiently awaiting the Spell tuning part
P.S - these newbie guide forums need a refresher, really old guides tend to not be up to date.
