Don't be dishearted. They are still folks in Ryzom who are some of the most wonderful gamers I've met.
Get yourself a cool community (or guild) and you're all set to see a whole new life in Atys.
Have fun and enjoy the game.

Do a few, if not all, of the welcomer quests, then get out of refugee island asap.
IMO the refugee island is just to learn the basic and get comfortable. You don't need to stay there forever trying to prepare for the mainland.
You'll fnd better help, and the bulk of the game great player base, on the mainland.
Also, the manual was a bit helpful to me if you haven't browsed through it yet.

Sigh.
If the manual does not help how about trying these two guides as they may help:
1) Quick Tips to Ryzom UI for Noobs
http://www.ryzom.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7155
2)Guide to Newbieland Wildlife Target Info
http://www.ryzom.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7476
If they help, then you can always refer any others who have questions to those guides. I hope they can help you out. Unfortunately I don't have the software or the time to add in-game pictures for now.
I wish you well.
