How do I use and train defensive magic?

As a total newbie I wonder how to use defensive magic. I thought the root-spell was a defensive magic spell but I don't seem to get any experience points from using it. How do I get defensive magic experience points? What do I need?

Root is actually offensive affliction - you can tell if you look at the spell school it falls under.
Generally the easiest way on newbie island to go up defensive magic solo is buying fear. In a team, the best way is to cast heal spells.

If you right click on any spell and do "info" you should be able to find out which spells are defensive and which are offensive
If you are a good defensive (heal especially) magician then you should always be welcome in a team if there is room
