Is it confirmed that the local supplier "What I want to buy" feature is broken? I am not referring to the Delivery missions they currently employ, but the "What I Want to Buy" option when you right click them.
They will tell me what they wish to buy, but I have found no way to sell them the items.

Either way it's a bug.
A) They should be buying what they say they will
or
B) They shouldn't claim to buy things.

I've noticed this too. It is frustrating to return to a vendor that says he'll buy something and then not be able to sell that item.

This became "broken" following patch 1 when the local suppliers were changed to give silly missions instead of buying your goods. Hopefully this will be put back in, since some of these guys were a god send to crafters looking to scrape back that extra buck or two.

I haven't been able to figure out how this works either, but when I craft stuff and wanna make some money, I get the mission things from the overseer folks. I don't know if you get as much from them as you would from one of the suppliers though. And what about Hawkers? Don't they buy things too? Just curious what all the options are.

You options are quite limited. Unless they have DRASTICALLY updated the Fame award given for Overseer missions, you are wasting your time and dapper doing them.
I ran some sample numbers in this thread:
http://www.ryzom.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5016
As you can see, you LOSE LESS money just selling back to the mat vendor than you do completing the missions. If you are after Fame, stick to the Patroller and Welcomer missions (the ones that reward with "Gratefulness"). This still assumes that the Fame for Overseer missions was not altered, which it *might* have been. There had to be SOME reason for slashing the dapper reward to 10% of what it was...
Assuming you are tryng to limit the financial bleeding as much as possible and assuming they re-enable the Local Suppliers, your best bet would be to sell them the items they are requesting.

Thanks for the numbers. I never bothered to count it all up for myself. (Guess I'm a lazy little Tryker, hehe.)
Sorta a bummer that it doesn't work out so well financially. I just always figured that I'd be making the stuff anyway, so I may as will give them to the overseer.

Actually, they *always* gave missions but you had to right click them to get access.
Also, if you have done the refugee island welcomer missions you know that the suppliers are supposed to be mission givers. I would like them to start buying goods again too though.

Local suppliers probably won't be buying stuff again until they figure out how to fix the bug so suppliers work correctly and don't trade with you if you have high negative fame with the tribe.

Prepatch one, the suppliers were one of the best ways to grind out a craft level. The overseers gave PLENTLY of dappers for at least ONE item you could craft, and while you waited out the reset time, you could check out what the suppliers were buying at a premium. Almost always you could find one or two items you could make, that were at least decent xp, and could grind at LEAST two levels and not see a HUGE drop in dappers.
Post patch one, it seem foraging and killing are the ONLY options for gaining cash at any speed faster than that of evolution.
The foragable "will buy" items were broken BEFORE patch one, not sure exactly when this broke, but I realized it after release and before I hit the mainland. So a month or so before patch one.
I am sure I am FAR from the only crafter/forager that would LOVE to see the suppliers "will buy" list working FULLY, including those odd things you can harvest.
