My newbie findings of Ryzom

I'm sorry to say that i'm really really disappointed with Ryzom. I've been looking forward to this game for well over a year or so. I didnt manage to get into the beta's because i couldnt get the download. But thats not what this is about. I know most will think i'm just a troll, or an immature player or just a noob in the MMORPG scene. Well none of that is true unfortunately.
I was really hoping i could get into this game. Having tried many others i'm not getting hooked like i used to get several years ago on all kinds of MMO's. I know content will be added later on and i must say the world of Ryzom is simply breath taking but i dont understand it. I'm not the kind of guy to buy a first person shooter with just the 9mm beretta implemented and a promise the rest will come later. In the meantime keep paying us.
IMHO this game is all beauty over game play which is such a waste. The spell/skill system is great, no more one type of uber spell/class/skill. The world looks awesome, heck first time i saw a predator take down a yubo i was so mesmarized i didnt notice he was chewing on me till i was looking at my corpse. Sadly tho it isnt enough to keep me interested. There simply isnt anything to do. finding good creatures to level your skill is just too much of a chore and crafting is a tad too expensive. i wont even mention the fact that magic is completely useless.
I hope more content will be added and the game will be around long enough to actually get some substance. Till that time i'll be off somewhere. To all you faithfull players out there a big thank you. Eventho i cant agree with you that this game is worth playing i do realize its people like you that will give the developer the chance to improve on what they have. You are keeping the game alive and for that i'd like to thank you. Good luck to you who remain. Maybe we'll get a chance to meet eachother in a couple of months.

i was a little sad the first time i entered the game and find the mounts are still not in
eventho i saw soulsnatser riding those things in beta 1
but i dont agree on the magic part tho
im having so mutch fun playing a mage big dmg and i can help peeps that are 50 levels above me
also its nice that you have all the options for armours and weapons wich make so mutch difrence in the game
still sad to see you go and it would indeed be nice if one day you would be back ingame

Never saw such a mature flame. Amazing.
I am a newbie as well and relatively new to the MMORPG-scene, though I've see a great deal of DAOC & COH, because of addictive friends, i just never played myself. I recently joined through the friends-programm and the graphics are indeed amazing. For a newbie like me there's still a lot to do and i'm not really missing the quests, though when i am on alone, there's not much i can do on my own but look for easy critters and level.
I've been playing OPEN Beta WOW as well and there the reverse is true. Graphics are less, but the gameplay is amazing. For now I will continue a couple of months on Ryzom (there's still A LOT to see/learn for me) and I will buy WoW when it's available in Europe. Play them both for 2-3 months and then make up my mind.

Well, i've solved that problem with some specific goals, for my guild aswell as for myself.
One of these goals is to solo real bad kitins, theoretically i can already solo a dreaded kincher, tho i never managed to pull just 1 yet
Nearly won the fight against a Master Kincher but his smaller dreaded friend came up to help...
I know it ain't a super über high end goal, but small goals like that enable you to keep going.
Now for the crafting being too expensive, everyone knows that, that's why many crafters harvest on the same time: you get the mats for free (and many of them at higher skill), gain skills and can craft freely after that.
For the magic part, i never bothered to exceed lvl 30 magic yet, but i must say healing is quite efficient, now when i see my guildmates' spells hitting i can only say magic is
all but useless...
I suggest you keep it up, it's always hard in the beginning, meet a few peeps with whom to share game experience and team up (at least a bit), challenges are everywhere, they just need one to think about them

kudos to the opening post, well said.
i have to agree with you, i'm also a very experienced gamers both mmog and singleplayer game-wise and the lack of content is starting to get to me.
the graphics and overall atmosphere are captivating, the gameplay is good and there's great variation in skill progression.
But after playing for 6 hours a day, 2 weeks in a row and having a character with a main skill of 50 and the other skills around 30 it feels like walking the hamster wheel whilst watching cable tv.
luckily ryzom makes the leveling grind a lot less boring than competing mmo-games but when it does finally get to you, you're left completely empty handed.
other games offer many storyline based quests, customizable housing, opportunities for social activities such as bars, instruments and the like and extensive clan based options (which i admit i havent explored in Ryzom),
Had there been a bit of a storyline-quest system or anything of the sort then the game would have enough variety to save itself from any source of tedium found in other aspects of the game.
but for now my conclusion is that ryzom's the most visually appealing hamster wheel on the market...
which btw does not mean it isn't enjoyable

i agree
somekind of endgame would be nice... they announced PvP and Guild vs Guild in patch 2 tho
i think it will give a new meaning to Ryzom
The hamsterwheel thing is really good btw
i have played a lot of MMORPGs and it all comes down to that
its just you as a player who needs to make it difrent
and the guys from ryzom do good work in event management imho

in my opinion they do a terrible job of event management - on the grounds that I've been playing since release and the only events I've had chance to be involved with were 1 sightseeing tour (at the point when I'd already visited every square inch of my realm) or a newbie hunt (in newbie island) at the point where there was nothing left there that posed a challenge, I was only there to make money crafting. Probably just bad luck but I could probably name another 20 people with the same experience (all in Tryker)
If its down to players to organise content, I would like to see Ryzom implementing tools to support this (eg an ingame calendar to schedule events, ways of organising large groups of people (grouping that allows 9 people isn't enough) etc etc)

I couldn't disagree more about the events. I've been in two official ones since I started (Pyr Levier kidnapping & tournament). And a player run event that had the full support of the guides/gms (messages being broadcast, gm presence to make it more 'official'). There are others I've decided to miss (noob island hunts, ghost stories).
The events in Ryzom are some of the best organised and frequent I've seen in an MMORPG.

well i have played a lot of MMORGPS where there was no single event ever... for all the mounths/years that i play. im happy to see some around here that are fun (talking about the tournament)

ok so it looks like they are holding some good events just not necessarily making sure that they are spread evenly across the playerbase/realms.
One thing that does grate is the role of guides - they play this weird not-quite IC but not really OOC role that doesn't really gel with me. I don't know whether I can roleplay with them because I don't know how they fit into the world. They seem to play the role of moderators of chat but also semi-characters in the world. I'd like to see a distinction between NPC's played by staff (who should be just like any other player) and those fulfilling an OOC role in game ie moderating, answering tickets etc
