What an Encyclopedia usually does :D It will hold information that you can look at. I am assuming firstly about the races and what little we know about Kami/Karavan.

The "rites" may possibly be the first "story missions"

Rumor has it that the 'rites' are the quests, not the tasks we have now, that will allow us to take on a greater role in the story and uncovering older lore as well.

But that's just a rumor.

the encyclopedia collects all the information your character has come upon, and is quite important for the storyline, as players will have to piece puzzles together from the information they gained
it is also rumored that it indeed is already collecting information while we are playing

Is this true? Where'd you learn this, xeno? I'm not doubting you; this is just the first time I've heard of it. I hope this is true, because it sounds really, really cool.

I pretty much thought the encyclopedia was how Neiana described it; that is, just a big book o' knowledge.

well, i'm piecing things together here, mostly from dev-chats:

statement: the encyclopedia will collect any information your character comes across

statement: certain quests will have information or pieces of informations as rewards, how they put them to use and if they manage to put them together correctly is up to the players

statement[from a GM near to release]: it is not fully active yet but we think it already is collectign informations

The encylopedia is this games version of exploration content. Its were you will go around collecting various information about things in the game and they are put in an online encylopedia. The idea is that you will be given missions to explore different areas and become an expert at them.

So lets say you decided to do the rite of carnivours. You would then go around getting all sorts of information about the carnivours in game. Upon completion of the rite you become and expert in that area. Then you might recieve some sort of bouns for knowing that area. Something like being able to track the carrnivours on your compass, or maybe a health bouns when you fight them. (This is just an example, and in no way is one of the actal rites).

Or you might try to learn the rite of land. With each level you earn you will be able to know how to track resource deposits.

If they actually pull it off, this game will have something totally unique and completly different than anything out there.
