Fantasy... oh yay...
Fantasy has been done and done to death. There is too many fantasy based MMOs and not enough sci-fi types, so making a sci-fi game with a difference is a very good idea, this game (when/if they fix it and add "content") will atract the sci-fi crowd who are limited on choice and some of the fantasy crowd too. There are alot of people who like sci-fi and are stiffed for choice because all the game developers are doing research like yours and making clone fantasy games instead of original "crazy" sci-fi themes.

You're sort of contradicting yourself there. The medival fantasy market is where all the competition is, Ryzom isn't in that market and it's not really in the Sci-Fi genre either (SWG, Planetside etc.).

Ryzom has it's own nishe, wich means that people who don't enjoy the two other categories, wants both or, like me, always loved the genre that Ryzom represents has a third option.
I don't think Nevrax's intention is to compete, they know that everyone don't belong to the masses and aim at attracting the smaller crowd that don't want to play as dwarves or hollywood-esque spacemen.

Unlike (pretty much all) other MMORPG's, Ryzom offers a unique world that isn't copied from Tolkien's or George Lucas' work, to me that's priceless.

Ryzom isn't popular because 3/4 of the players logged off with patch 1 and haven't come back.

Ryzom may stay unpopular because they can't figure out what was so bad about patch 1 enough to admit it. Given the patch had a lot of great fixes and stuff, some thing were absolutely horrid.

Ryzom is no onger popular with its initial launch fanbase because it pressed that great big nerf button and destroyed the only fun in a content-shy game forced out before truly worth subscribing to.

Ryzom isn't popular because it's not a roxxor/12-years-old game, when the public is.

*sadness...*

And the fantasy speach doesn't apply, as stated, because a lot of ryzom players are <EQ/DAOC/...> players who are tired to see the same contents in the same worlds. Boo, i'm a dwarf. Boo, i'm an elve. Boo, i'm a troll. Soooo boring!

ding ding ding! that's exactly right. I'm sick an' tired of being some standared fantasy race, and Ryzom is offering a unique, hybrid sci-fi/fantasy experience.

and it's a damn good one too :)

I do not subscribe to your theory nor do I fit that mold. I enjoy many games, many genres, my KIDS are beyond the scope of the sarcasm of your statement and I am also in the ranks of those waiting to see if this game actually meets the billing to which it was touted.

Some who have left posted in the same such manner lowering the effectiveness of worthwhile negative communication to the level you so describe, but they do not represent all, nor do YOU have full insight on the full scope of opinions stated by the former players who all arrived at the same conclusion but for many many different personal reasons.

I'll remind you you said that when this game goes the way of Horizons. :)
