Why I Really Like Ryzom- A New Perspective on Matters

Now, this is my first MMORPG, but I'm going to try to explain why I have not been like *so* many others and quit.

You can have your EQ, your CoH, but I'm staying with Ryzom. Why?

Because it is HARD.

I like a challenge, and I always have. The newest patch was absolutely wonderful for me, as it gave me a chance to reselect my skills and a much harder game. Before the patch, I was not nearly as interested in Ryzom, and even stopped playing for a week and a half or so.

Now, reading the thread on the event, I am GLAD the GMs will not give us help. I'm speaking as a relatively low-level Tryker (32 melee, 14 magic, 24 harvest, 25 craft), which, as you all know, suffer quite a few issues with getting out of our lands.

But you know what? I don't mind it that much. If we as the players have to work together to do things when the GMs won't insert their divine hand and lift us all up and carry us to new lands, I'm ready. It makes it all the more immersive and fun for me- along with bringing back my old D&D gaming days.

After all, back then, the GM told a story {one of the things that I am a bit disappointed is not here yet, along with GORGEOUS music, but I can wait to level up so I can PARTAKE in the plot when it comes} and threw situations at us, the players. We had to make our own decisions, plot our own courses, and what we did IMPACTED THE WORLD.

Now, admittedly, it's going to be nigh-impossible for Trykers to get to the event. However, compare these two scenarios:
-We get there after hours and hours of trying, just in time for the event {all with max. death penalties}
or
-The GMs mystically teleport us there.

Which one would you feel more proud of yourself in?

Yes, the first is exceedingly unlikely, but it is the difficulty that makes this game so fascinating.

I love a challenge, especially one like Ryzom where you HAVE to come up with lateral thinking to accomplish aims. I love all of the options available to me, picking and choosing, thinking on the run from several Baying Cloppers about how to best escape before I'm dead-- which happens in two blows.

I may just be a naive little child, but I enjoy this game simply for what it is- a challenging game that requires a lot more thought than slice, dice, hack, slash, run, kill.

The patch has only made things better, from my perspective.

At your level it doesn't seem like you have seen what it is like before the patch..... it wasn't easy before the patch so much as things were actually possible.

By the way, they even admit its broken, you are supposed to be able to dodge.

Actually, I have.

I started playing this game when it first came out =P

I just have school that gets in the way of things...

Best joke I have heard so far =)

First - if this is your first MMORPG, how can you say it is hard? :)

No, Ryzom is not hard. Ryzom is a joke with a lack of high level content so far. Four weeks and people have broken the level 200 barrier, 180 if you want melee fight. Nothing to do for them, no challenge. At level 110 we beat the toughest mobs the game had to offer. Unfortunately there is no reward for that so it is rather pointless. We made it around the world, visited every place there is to visit.

If you want hard try Everquest and lead a guild to the end of the plane of Time. Best game if you like coordination, strategic planning and encounters where a single mistake by 1 person kills 50 others in your raid.

And I'm sure that explains all the people whining that it is too hard ^_~

There are two parties right now

a) Powerplayers - Quitting because there is no content and the game is boring as hell in the higher levels, repetetive with no goal & no challenge.

b) Solo players & people without a guild - Complaining that their reason for playing the game has been ruined.

Both are right in their own way - however - Ryzom is far away from being a hard game.

I do not think you could lump everyone into just two categotries, but you did hit the 2 most populous groups.

One area I challenge within that though is "Hard".

I do not, nor did many who left consider the changes hard, but "UN"fun. excessive aggros and overly buffed Mobs are just not fun, especially when in such overpopulated social groups.

Peope play for Fun. Yes, some for hard and challenging, some for simple enjoyment after a long day.

No need to go back into the numerous reasong an undisputably large portion of the playerbase has left, but the end result is that you are playing and you have a lot more space to roam without all the running to and fro of all those powerlevellers and funseekers.

Of course, ctusk mentions players with over 200 skill, and therefore, with such skill in so short a time the game must be EASY! What he fails to mention however is the fact that those high levels were obtained BEFORE patch 1.

Why? I suppose he is trying to prove that all of those who believe that Ryzome (today) is too hard are just a bunch of whiners, but that is only conjecture.

I am with you caleinia, Ryzom as it is right now is hard, and quite a challenge. When the patch first came out I admit it, I complained bitterly. In part because I listened to all of the other complaints, and in part because my first experiences after the patch seemed to line up with all of the complaints I'd read.

But then I decided to see, on my own and not listenting to what others say I can and cannot do after the patch, just what I COULD do. And you know what? I found I can actually do quite a lot. After playing for a few hours with the challenge at least 10 times what it was pre-patch I found that I was really enjoying the game more than I ever did before the patch.

And, though I do not level nearly as fast as before, I do level, and with each new level a new satisfaction knowing that I have faced the challenge before me and won!

I am sure there a a dozen tweaks that still need to be done to get things into balance for the middle and higher levels, but I am also sure that they will take place, based only on Nevrax's past record of performance in handling customer concerns.

And to anyone who is already over level 200 and thinks this game is easy, try rolling a new character and playing it from my perspective for awhile. You'll find LOTS of challenge, lots to overcome, and lots of reward as well!

(edit: Oh, I play a Matis, my favorite hunt is just outside the Yrkanis gates, right where it is said there is the largest known gathering of Ruagus and Gingo. It is hard, and it is a blast!)

Oh I totally agree. I didn't call the game hard - that was Cal, I don't think it is.

What it is in its current state is as you said , totally un-fun.

It is harder to level than before patch one when gameplay was fun and relaxing. The biggest problem is, there is no reason to keep leveling through the now un-fun parts of the game because there is neither a goal nor a reward for doing so. Nothing to gain but levels, not even working towards seeing new, unexplored parts of the game - plain nothing. Not worth it.
